Trying Brandon Sanderson's Outline Template!

Показать описание
I tried to apply Brandon Sanderson's writing lectures on my sci-fi/fantasy writing project as a Wannabe Writer. This is the second lecture that focuses on how Brandon Sanderson outlines his novels.

Alongside trying to put the theory he teaches to practice, I am also trying out the challenge of writing 35'000 new words during the course duration. To do this I broke it down into four writing sessions, each with a word goal of 6'250 words, and 10'000 words to write a bit every day during the course duration.

If you want to follow along with the wordcount challenge, you can do so here:

Hello. For a generic list of plot archetypes I suggest that you read SB Morrison's article on the matter.

Calling it a plot archetype is quite misleading, to be honest. It's just good ol' taking inspiration. Everyone does it. Not just authors, but every creative type does it, consciously or not. We take inspiration from things we like or find interesting. Brandon's idea of this so-called "plot archetype" is the same thing.

And because it's misleading, people would go look for a list; when they hear the word archetype, they would think of Quest, Rag to Riches, Dude With a Problem, etc. It's not. Brandon's idea of plot archetype is simply studying the story you love, see what works and why (studying how they handle the promise, progress, and payoff), and pull out things you like and use them in your story. That's all there is to it.

It's not a formula, just taking inspiration. You'll most likely match them with ideas from other stories as well. Bradon does this with Mistborn. He combines most of the promise, progress, and payoff from Ocean 11 with the little twist at the end from The Italian Job. By doing so, he creates another "archetype." See what I'm getting at?

I can tell English isn't your first language, Archetype is pronounced Ark-type or Ark-e-type, prob'ly seems really weird why we have the word Arch yet in that context doesn't match, IDK, I'm not a linguistic

The time I would use plot template is never. Why would I? The reader will read and forget the story as yet another conveyer belt product. When you have read enough books and come across a template story you kinda feel what happens next and how it ends. Fastest way to lose a reader. No way, Jose!
