By the end of the 1950s, Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team at GM were turning their attention to the creation of an entirely new generation of Chevrolet Corvette. This new, second-generation (C2) Corvette debuted in 1963 and featured radical new styling, penned by Larry Shinoda and Peter Brock, combined with a much-improved chassis. These C2 Corvettes have gone on to become among the most collectible Corvettes in history and one of the most sought-after subjects for upgrades and customization.
The example on offer is a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible custom built in 2019 by Jeff Hayes at American Speed Shop in Bloomington, Indiana. Starting with an original 1966 C2 convertible, Hayes replaced its standard engine with a 6.2L LS3 V-8 that produces 540 HP. This potent, modern power unit was then mated to a 4L70E automatic transmission and paired with Z06 suspension and brakes.
Finished in silver paint with custom red leather interior, this Corvette also boasts Vintage Air air conditioning, power steering, power hood, a custom Haartz cloth convertible top and chrome C6 Z06 wheels with Toyo custom Redline tires. A head-turning ’66 C2 Corvette convertible with all the poise and performance of a modern, late model Z06.
