Donny was everything. He went through a lot. He had schizophrenia really bad. He was a genius, but he was sick. He couldn't help it. He wrote the music, but the lyrics were written by his close friend bc he knew Donny was in a horrible place. Donny knew it was abt him. He sang the song beautifully, but immediately left the studio crying. OMG. Such a beautiful man. Pls react to his daughter Lalah's cover of his dad's song A Song for You. Then, check out the songwriter of this song Leon Russell live. It's very different & pls keep an open mind. You'll feel it & love it. Thx

You most definitely have to react to his song, "Song for You", it is in my opinion one of the greatest love songs ever written. Maybe the greatest period. It's definitely the greatest I've heard. His voice and his piano playing on that song is unmatched. I'm sure you will love it as well.

Donny Hathaway's story is sad but amazing. He was one of the most soulful singers ever in my book. He sang with some greats, and it is so sad that he passed at a young age.RIP Donny.❤

Donny Hathaway is a true musical genius.
There just doesn't seem to be an end to his wonderful music. Whenever I get the opportunity to listen to a Donny Hathaway song that I haven't heard before, it's always a much cherished moment.

ITZJT, this song has nothing to do with the freedom you're thinking of. Many people think Donny Hathaway wrote the song "Someday We'll All Be Free" about Black Americans and/or the Civil Rights Movement . This isn't true. First, Donny didn't write the lyrics and secondly the song has nothing to do with the Civil Rights Movement or Black Americans in general. It is a song written for and about Donny and what he personally was going through as he fought his demons. "Someday We'll All Be Free", which was written by Edward Howard about the mental pain that Hathaway was experiencing. After Hathaway recorded the song, he listened to the play back of the studio cut. Hathaway cried as he listened to the song for the first time. After Hathaway's death, this disclaimer was added to the liner notes of "Extensions of A Man" by Edward Howard:

"Donny is no longer here, but the song [Someday We'll All Be Free] gathers momentum as part of his legacy... Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out."

Howard also added:

"It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny, because Donny was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him.'"

On January 13, 1979, Donny Hathaway was found dead on the side walk outside of the Essex House Luxury Hotel in New York City, where he had been living. Since the glass from the window had been carefully removed and there were no signs of struggle, his death was ruled a suicide.

Yes he was caught up in a trapped lost soul and fell into suicide death....and a warning for don't kill yourself or you will be in hell eternally...Deut. 30:19.
