Carahunge and Shakri waterfall

Показать описание
We first visited Shakri waterfall, a very popular picnic site. We stayed the night there before we visited Carahunge. Carahunge is also known in local lore as Zorats Karer, Dik-Dik Karer, and Tsits Karer, meaning "vertical stones". In 2004, the site was officially named the Karahunj (Carahunge) Observatory. The site is a necropolis dating mainly from the Middle Bronze Age to the Iron Age, finding enormous stone tombs from those periods within the area. About 1/3 of the stones feature a circular hole. Some have suggested that the standing stones could have been used for astronomical observation. Since the holes are relatively unweathered, they may not be prehistoric in origin, so there is uncertainty around this possible purpose. Others conclude that the lines of stones were the remains of a city wall, possibly from the Hellenistic period, that had been constructed mostly of rubble and loam, and in which the upright stones had acted as reinforcement.
