Does anyone know why the Caterpillar 6090FS was discontinued??? Was there a particular problem with the 6090FS ? It seems strange to me that the biggest hydraulic shovel available would be phased out. Especially when there are large fleets of 400+ ton haul trucks working at many mines around the world.

Cat actually produced a 6120 only 2 were produced absolutely mammoth hyd digger the cab was basically an electric shovel cab and operating weight well in excess of 1200t look it up interesting read. In terms of the 6090 being discontinued I have heard they are a super labour intensive machine possibly had something to do with it also I’m pretty sure they only released the 6090 in face shovel config so wouldn’t really suit alot of applications where as a backhoe would.

I’m thinking that excavators and dozers have the same issue…once they get past a certain size, the technology doesn’t exist that can keep them working properly without having great issues…the Komatsu D575 was plagued with undercarriage and transmission problems and the Cat FS 6090 was plagued with hydraulic issues…both are discontinued…
