Understanding your social media audience - In a nutshell

Finding out who follows you on Twitter or on your Facebook page is easy, because both platforms tell us. This is especially powerful on Facebook as it knows so much about us. Look at the insights section of your Facebook page, it breaks down the demographics of your audience in age and sex, that’s a good place to start.
I’m not sure many people have actually spent time looking in to who follows them on Twitter. Via Twitter analytics, I can tell that nearly 50% of my audience are based in the Southwest of England, 56% of them are men and they’re mostly interested in Business and Technology news. That differs from my Facebook page, which has a slight female bias, with nearly 70% of them aged between 35 & 54.
Once you understand who your audience is, you can better serve them the type of content that they’re going to be interested in. But, not everybody is the same.
So what do we do about this then? Well, we test! We have to see which type of content resonates. Set out a plan containing a mixture of content from text posts, to links, images, infographics and of course, video too. You have to take in to consideration the time of day when looking at your analytics, but you will start to get a better idea of what the audience engages with the most. And when you figure that out, give them more of the same!
This is also really useful if you start to advertise on these channels too. That way, you can target your adverts at the correct demographics, as you’ve tested content out on their peers already.
Good luck!
