Dark Castle could have been a great game - I love exploring spooky haunted castles in video games - but dear GOD, the controls. When you can't take two steps without tripping over your own feet, yeah, I'm not having fun.

Thing is, when I was a kid about 10 years old I played the hell out of these games. Now at 40, not so much.

Interesting to see Street Smart on your list. I actually owned and liked this one as a random pick up, as a kid. It was one of those cases of trying to make the best out of what you got. Somehow I played it enough to beat it on Hard mode back then, but I also had much less games in my backlog back then. I tried this one again recently on emulation and now fully understand how shitty it really plays. I think it was more about exploiting the AI to win back then.

Dark Castle was another one I got super cheap as a kid, and that one I HATED. Nearly unplayable.

What makes me sad is we didn't have any konami shooting games on SEGA Genesis especially "Gradius" and I wish some indie developers will make a fan project about "Gradius"!

Fantasia is, in my opinion, one of the worst Disney games ever made for the Sega Genesis. The hit detection is garbage, the music is atrocious, and the level design is incredibly confusing.

I also have to add Toys (the movie with Robin Williams) and Batman Returns (not the Sega CD version). Toys is terrible because most of the projectile weapons don't work (except for a "Peanut Gun"), and the game features these security camera sections that require deactivating the cameras with a water gun before getting zapped by a laser. Batman Returns is just borderline unplayable and looks graphically boring.

Having fighting game style combat in a cinematic platformer seems like it could be really cool if they got the controls right. Batman Forever and X-Perts are both known for having terrible controls though. They certainly didn't skimp on production value, which makes it odd that they wouldn't make sure that the controls work and the games are actually playable.

EDIT: Comix Zone shows the idea can work really well if you've good control and gameplay at the core.

I had that Batman game on the Gamegear when I was a kid and could NEVER figure out how to grapple up and down platforms. I remember playing it for hours because it was one of the few games I had, and just being stuck within the first couple minutes of the game forever. Never got past the first level.

Completely agree with Batman Forever, I think the biggest disappointment on the system. Screenshots looked great, but my god was the game about as entertaining as wallpaper paste. The music was....there..
I guess, and trying to work out the grapple with a 3-button pad was ridiculous. Also, I found Ariel: the little Mermaid to be quite bad too, a strange misfire for a Genesis Disney game in my opinion. Great video as always John!

My pick for worst game would be Slaughter Sport/Tongue of the Fatman. I remember forcing myself to play this since I spent all my money to buy this cart. What a stinker

I found Dark Castle really really easy. Probably because I played the original Mac version in junior high (on lab computers, nearly every day), and knew exactly how the game worked. I honestly found it better than the Mac version simply because it had color and better sound. As far as annoying sound effects, the Mac had those too. Same with the weird controls. I accept that game may be a kind of acquired taste (I played it on lab computers where there weren't many alternatives). But it's not THAT bad if you know how to play/control it.

Yes, Dark Castle is really, really bad. So very clunky- almost broken.

Rise of the Robots has really cool box art and then… crapola! Fun video, John. I love watching train wrecks.
