Very good point & in x-men 1 when he says “I can’t stop them all” in reference to the bullets being fired it’s because bullets are made of lead, the one that he stops against the guys head is metal and only used at certain times.

Maybe Shaw did not know it was metal that Erik could move, maybe he thought Erik could move anything and when he got angry after his moms death, Shaw only learn that it was just metal and not telekinesis.
