I like the fact that you mentioned the well dressed slaves of Mansa Musa, cuz it breaks the common stereotype that all slaves where treated badly. Because this wasn't the case in Mamluk Egypt (Mamluk literally means slave in Arabic) and an Ethiopian slave who ruled Egypt, and an Ethiopian slave who became the Kingmaker of india's sultanate, the slave wives of ottoman sultans (who even ruled as regents) and many other slaves in middle east and africas history, even sometimes in China and India as well, who were treasured and seen as accessory to be treated well, not just a cheap commodity like how it happened in the Americas.

Overall, you did a good job on this. And I liked your channel and many videos you made, you did a good job

👍 Really well written, I appreciate the nuanced take on who he was and what he did. Mostly people just say he owned gold mines and gave so much away on his journey to Mecca it ruined local economies and leave it at that.

I've read several analyses that call into question Mansa Musa's actual effect on the gold market in Cairo. All of the most fantastic claims about Musa's time spent in Cairo come from Shihab ad-Din al-'Umari, who didn't arrive in Cairo until a number of years after the pilgrimage and was writing in a more stylized genre that lent itself towards hyperbole. There are a couple other sources that attribute a devaluation of gold in 1324 to Musa's stay in Cairo, but the degree of the devaluation that those accounts attest to was significantly less extreme than in al-'Umari's account and fell within the typical range that the relatively volatile gold market was known to fluctuate. The "12 years" claim is particularly dubious.

Honestly, the inflation this man caused is the kind of inflation we like. Where the poorest are the greatest beneficiaries.

A great documentary overall except for a few things. Firstly did every European monarch who ruled through the Feudalistic system get rich by exploitation? 97% of the people were peasants and had to work for free for their feudal overlords who in turn had to pay taxes to their King. I am sure 97% of Mali's population weren't slaves. Secondly you said Musa purchasing slaves and fine garments while on is pilgrimage showed a peak into his true character. He just had given a huge amount of money away and then brought slaves. Most people had their slaves dressed in clothes that were less than glamorous. The fact that Musa had brought his slaves fine garments shows his generosity.

For a guy who was supposedly the richest man the world has seen, the only legacy he left behind was a mud brick building and some Arabic manuscripts. That’s very sad.
