My mother should see this video. She can't be calm in most situations and makes me really uncomfortable and stressed out. I'm a learning driver and your videos really helped me. Thank you.

Learning off a family member is 1000 times harder than learning with instructor it shows you guys have a real talent. Not everybody knows how to Coach / teach and when you sit with someone like my mum for half an hour it makes you appreciate the actual instructors 😆 keep up the good work with the vids mate iv learnt more from you than I have in 25 lessons. Test booked for 9th December wish me luck 🤞

Couple of extra tips in there for me teaching my wife. I do gently help with the steering mainly when changing gear as because one part of the body is moving to the left it's easy for the whole body (car) to want to follow. Absolutely no hurry when stalling, take your time and we'll start again. Anyone who has passed their test should know a vehicle with L plates needs more space and time. They will just have to wait. My student is very valuable and every mistake is a learning experience. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks for this video, I found it really helpful as a supervising parent. I taught my oldest how to drive and he passed first time. Having done advanced driving before (25 years ago) thought i "knew it all" and was the most "patient supervisor" known to humankind :-) . However reality hit me hard for my second child and realised I neither of these things! It was just that they learn in different ways and I needed to respond and adapt from my previous methods. This video (and your others) has really helped me in this process. Very grateful for you posting this content!

My instructor used to ask me random questions about driving while we were parked, especially when I first started, which really helped without distracting me while I was driving.

You’re so on point! I always ask for guidance with the people that have taught me but they just can’t enough for me to feel comfortable turning or reversing. I am starting a driving class tomorrow and I really hope this instructor is helpful like you.

Richard, this is truly brilliant stuff - thank you. I’m currently teaching my second child to drive (awaiting end of lockdown, when she will get professional instruction) and your explanations are a huge help for us both. The insights into psychology and what learners find difficult, and how to solve these difficulties, are truly excellent - and entertaining (e.g. the momentary detour you did in another vid into ‘gravitational lensing’ of light).

17:20 “Learner drivers want to drive in a hedge... in a field... because of the oncoming bus” - that made laugh 😂

Very informative, thanks. My wife is learning to drive and I never realised that she could get her own learner insurance and was resigned to having to add her to mine. Would still prefer it if she stuck with her professional instructor though. Mainly because he has a dual control car but also to avoid passing on any of my bad habits!

Shouldn't drive on motorway as a learner - check!
Your instructor should not be on the phone whilst teaching a learner - check!

Both happened to me when I was learning to drive. By accident my friend and I ended up on the M5 at night, but got off at the next exit. You live, you learn.
Also, my instructor started to take phone calls whilst I was driving when I got enough confidence in my driving. It felt good and bad as I was in charge fully but this wasn't that I paid for. Anyways it's all behind me now. One thing for sure, if your instructor is taking phone calls whilst you drive, you should look for another instructor.
