Показать описание
With 433,989 inhabitants, the city of Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and has a population density of 4936 inhabitants per square kilometer. The surrounding area is also densely populated; urban development and infrastructure continue seamlessly to the north-east and north-west of the city and along Lake Zurich. Over one million people live in the core area of the Zurich agglomeration (including the city), and around 1.45 million in the entire agglomeration, one sixth of the Swiss population.
Originating from the Roman settlement of Turicum, Zurich became a free imperial city in 1262 and a member of the Swiss Confederation in 1351. The city of reformer Huldrych Zwingli became the second most important (after Wittenberg) center of the Reformation in 1519. To this day, it is considered the starting point of the worldwide Reformed Church and the Anabaptists. In the industrial age, the city experienced its rise to become Switzerland's economic and financial metropolis and a global city.
With its main railway station, the largest in Switzerland, and the airport, the city of Zurich is a continental transportation hub. Thanks to the large banks and insurance companies based here, it is an international financial center and the largest financial center in Switzerland, followed by Geneva and Lugano. The city is also home to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the University of Zurich, the two largest universities in Switzerland. With its location on Lake Zurich, its well-preserved medieval old town and a wide range of cultural activities and nightlife, it is also a center of tourism.
For years, Zurich has been ranked alongside Basel and Geneva as one of the cities with the highest quality of life in the world and, at the same time, with the highest cost of living worldwide. Zurich is the city with the third-highest density of millionaires in the world after Monaco and Geneva.
