Why so Few Americans live in Northern Maine?

Have you ever wondered why so few people live in Northern Maine, despite its breathtaking beauty? With its rugged coastline and towering mountains, Maine seems like the perfect place to settle down. So, what’s keeping people away from this hidden gem? Sure, Maine is famous for lobsters and Stephen King’s spooky tales, but did you know there’s a massive part of the state that hardly anyone lives in? It’s almost like a secret part of Maine that few ever get to see. As you can see on this map, Northern Maine is truly vast. Look how much larger it is compared to southern Maine, yet the population density is so low. Let’s explore why.

There are some valid points in this video but the biggest thing I learned is that whoever is reading this or using AI to read this clearly has never tried to pronounce Aroostook County in real life.

Northern Maine is not for lazy people.

There was a downeaster from Maine visiting Texas. The Texan says "Look here son, everything in Texas is big. I can get in my car in the morning, drive until noon, eat my lunch, drive until supper and still not get to the other side of my property." The crusty ol' downeaster not missing a beat says "A'yup, I had a car like that once." Greetings from next door northern NH.

In 1986, I was fortunate to get my dream station in northern Maine, USCG LORAN-C Station Caribou. I was an Electronics Technician of 2nd Class. I lived at Loring AFB for a few months and was lucky enough to get a house at Presque Isle AFB housing for a three-year tour of duty. I was young and stupid back then, but I loved my time there. Brutal winters are an understatement, but the forests, the lakes, and the people made the whole deal worth it. Now that I am old and still stupid, I am waiting for my wife to retire so we can move back to Maine. Great video.

I moved from southern Maine to the town of Jackman in NW Maine 6 years ago, and it’s the best thing I’ve done with my life since enlisting in the army in 1986. If you love the outdoors it’s the place for you, I almost live on my snowshoes in the winter. All the stores are closed on the major holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, so people can be home with their families where they belong. The closest traffic light is about 70 miles away, along with the nearest fast food places. It’s not uncommon to drive 40 miles at night without seeing another car. The only thing I’d change would be getting rid of all the bugs from May-July!

I live here in the North. The biting flies are vicious. The winters are extremely long, cold and deadly. This is where Sasquatch lives in abundance. All of Stephen King’s stories are based on true events that have happened here.. and the Grizzlies, wolves and mountain lions roam the dirt road at night looking for people that don’t smell “local” so do yourself a favor and stay away…🥶😱

Please don’t come to Maine. We like it just as it is now. Please .

That sleek light-rail train is in the other Portland (Oregon), three thousand miles away from Portland, Maine.

I'm sure all the wildlife are very happy that northern Maine has not grown much .. we need more pristine untouched places like northern Maine. Keeps our air clean and stops global warming let's all hope Northern Maine stays the way it currently is

There are cities in Aroostook. There is real beauty there. It’s a privalege to live there. I have loved living in this place. Don’t trust this video. It appears this video is produced by someone who has never been there, and definitely cannot pronounce the names properly.

In a few more years, I'm leaving Bangor and going to Eagle Lake. My family is from there. Bangor has become busy which is good, but the peace and quiet up north is PRICELESS!!

I went to College in Northern Maine, and I guess the narrator failed to mention that there are three higher educational institutions, Northern Maine is home to the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI), Northern Maine Community College (NMCC) also in Presque Isle, and the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK). I choose to go to school in Northern Maine is because of the beauty that part of the State offers, and ended up spending three (3) years in Northern Maine. Is it isolated, Yes, it is beautiful, Yes.

I was born and raised in Limestone. Since the Loring Air Force Base closure everything went down the drain with it and jobs were few

I lived in Maine for a decade. The first thing all you people need to know is it’s freezing cold up there and there isn’t jack shit to do. Unless your into snowmobiling in winter and running from black flies in "summer"...lol....Also this video on YouTube most of the video you’re seeing is actually not Maine…. I don’t know where you got the video from but most of it it sure as shit is not Maine.

The only reason more people dont live in northern Maine is the lack of good employment. The massive housing shortage here is spreading up north fast too. Janet Mills has badly damaged our great state.

As someone who lives in Houlton. Some of this is accurate. But few paved roads? lol. This is bullshit. 200 inches of snow? The Maine state record snow fall for a season is 170 and it’s only hit that once.
