It is very difficult to find which one to choose when in the middle of a conversation... for people learning this now, your just going to have to drill it into yourself through repition.... in the same way you need to learn uma and um through drilling and .... its always going to be estava dormindo... or tava dormindo.... on the other side of the coin, para translates to and for.... for us its easy, but Brazilians would need to drill examples that come off without even having to think about it..
