The Real Horror Stories of Appalachia | Short Documentary

In 2019, 43 million people in the United States lived below the poverty line, twice as many as it was fifty years before. 1.5 million children were homeless, three times more than during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Entire families are tossed from one place to another to work unstable jobs that barely allow them to survive. In the historically poor Appalachian mining region, people rely on food stamps for food.

Them being so thankful and grateful had me balling my eyes out. This is what we're supposed to do as humans, help one another out. Show love and compassion.

My dentist has volunteered with Random Access Medicine for a long time. He told me that he often has to pull every tooth in someone's mouth because there has been so much damage to the gums and so many broken teeth. He said that when they are done they take a quick casting before they wake up and they make dentures right there. They were originally founded to bring medical care to third world countries, but now they also serve Americans.

I'm glad to see human beings helping other human beings that are less fortunate then they are and doing it with kindness and respect 💘

They can now kiss federally subsidized food assistance goodbye. Project 2025 is in FULL effect. The "not for profit, free medical care" that comes to the region annually will be even more important now with the cuts to medicaid...

Why is it that struggling African American families are never depicted in a similarly sympathetic manner?

When you're poor and Black, you're called lazy and a burden. When you're poor and white, you're called hard working and "down on your luck". Quite a difference in characterization

I was born in Kentucky and raised in New York. My heart goes out to the people of Appalachia. I wish I had the means to do something to help them someday possibly that dream can come true. The level of poverty in the United States has grown exponentially.

After seeing that video and seeing all those people who got help for some reason it just, I just got really emotional about it thank God for all those volunteers who gave those people what they really needed

I guess, seeing all these volunteers should come across as a heartwarming story... but for someone from a country with universal health care it´s just real live horror.
Makes you really apprechiate never having to worry about receiving medical treatment when you need it.

The only reason that the poor are overweight it is cheaper to buy junk food, fruit vegetables and meat costs too. It should be the other way around. Nobody in the Western world should wait around for medical treatment, not like that .😢

These are some of the most misfortunate people in America.Yet they are some of the most thankful and patriotic.

For the richest country in the world, and yet the citizens continue to vote against their best interest. Even the poor vote to give tax breaks to the richest people while loosing benefits. The Rich continue to pray on the uneducated.

This is this is sad and this is America. People need to stop saying that this country is rich.
