When I try to change the email address, I get a message saying the email is in use by another account, but I have no idea what account it's being used for. I think I made a temp Google profile 10 years ago, but I have no idea what it is. I'm trying to cancel my old Earthlink account bc it's now $10/mo, but it's the address connected to Google. Am I SOL?

It works. It's not to change it to a new Gmail... It's to send your email to an EXISTING Gmail account. THAT'S WHY YOU'RE NOT GETTING A VERIFICATION EMAIL.
