In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Chow Chow that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 40 to 70 pounds
Height: 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 - 15 years

The Chow chow is not really fond of being hugged or fussed over, but he'll be a quiet, attentive companion to his favorite person, and his loyalty extends to other family members. If he's raised with children, he'll accept them willingly, but he's not the type of dog to tolerate abuse, so he's best for homes with older kids who know how to treat dogs.

If he has lots of positive encounters with strangers during his impressionable puppyhood, he'll handle strangers with equanimity. This is, however, a highly territorial and protective breed, who'll give a clear warning to anyone approaching without his person's welcome.

The breed's most memorable physical feature may be his blue-black tongue. According to Chinese legend, the tongue got its blue hue at the time of creation, when a Chow licked up drops of the color as the sky was being painted. He also stands out for his almost straight rear legs, which give him a stiff, choppy, or stilted gait. He's not speedy, so he's not the best choice for a jogger, but he has excellent endurance and can be a good walking companion.

When it comes to training, a verbal correction is usually all that's required to set the Chow Chow straight. No dog should ever be hit, but it's especially counterproductive with this breed. The fiercely proud and independent Chow will never respond to physical abuse. But earn his respect with firm consistency, and you won't have any problem training him.

Very lazy and they have a diva like attitude, they’re hot stuff and they know it. The most loyal dog there is. Mine was so strong and brave too, she’d stand up against anyone to protect me. They’re amazing.

My Chow prevented me from getting mugged by attacking the first person and the other 2 ran away. Chased a stranger away from our yard. I have no doubt he would die for us. Not lazy, they just do things their own speed. No effort in house breaking....automatically become housebroken in 12 weeks. I will NEVER get another breed ever.

I had a Chow, a Black male, he weighed about 90 lbs. As he got older he had hip and skin issues, medications were expensive. He also had an eye procedure done to deal with his inverted eyelids. When he was taken to the Vet he had to be sedated, otherwise they wouldn't treat him. He was a loving dog to my family, especially my son. I sure do miss him

Chow chows are great bodyguards and they are always working even when they are just resting. I can see how some see them as lazy. I love how they can hear someone approaching far sooner than a human . They are great babysitters when trained properly. As far as clingy goes I don't see chows this way. I see it as they are almost like having a personal bodyguard.

All of these facts are true. I may need to add one more. Once you've had Chow, You wouldn't want any other breeds after. Even though they're nuisance sometimes but they're very special. Chows don't act and behave like other dog breeds, they have personality of their own, even though they're smart, they often act like they don't know anything unless its for what they want.

My neighbor down the street owned one.
For some reason he was mad friendly with us (we were children then) and would wonder up to the yard. Pretty cool dog. If you had told me he was also a beast. I would never had believed it.

Our family have 3 Chows.... the mother and her 2 female offspring. The mother is attached to my wife, one female is attached to me and the other female is our floater/butterfly.... loves everyone. They are very loyal and perfect watch dogs, sensing visitors before they even get to our door. They cuddle with the one they’re attached to most and mine will jump onto the bed and lay down beside me. They’re easy to house train as puppies and obedient because we trained them at an early age. But like the video says, it must be early and with patience and an alpha mentality.... rewarding and complimenting was a must with ours.

I swear, they are the most loyal dogs. My coconut is protective and very selective about who she entertains. Very lazy but can be motivated by their owners. Very loving dogs 💗

When my family first got our rescue dog, we noticed that as he grew, he would prefer to be independent and have his own space. He does not like to be cuddled at all when he is relaxing. We thought our dog was broken or secretly a cat until we did a test and found out he was part chow chow. Explains a lot for his blue spotted tongue, skin folds, and attitude! He is a very smart dog though and is very loyal and friendly to everyone he meets. He is not the cuddly type and the sleep on your bed type, but it makes it even more special anytime he comes close and shares his space with you

Love my chow chow bear. Easiest dog to train, very clean, super loyal and protective. They get a bad reputation, our boy is very cuddly, super intelligent, very alert.

We adopted a chow when I was 8 it was already older. We got him because no one wanted him because he was “aggressive.” He was the sweetest dog once i was chased by a pack of dogs and My chow came to the rescue and scared and fought the dogs away. The only thing I can say is you have to be responsible because they can be so territorial and protective you can get law suits if they bite or kill any other dogs/cats if they aren’t social.

My sister's chow chow is really attentive when guarding the house inside. Whenever he hears foot steps, he would bark nonstop. Aside from that he is so sweet and loyal. Even though I am not really his master, whenever I will get to my sister's house, he would be overly excited that he would pee while wanting to hug me
