Latino vs Hispanic | Constructing a New America

In her new book, "Making Hispanics: How Activists, Bureaucrats, and Media Constructed a New America" (University of Chicago Press), UC Berkeley sociologist G. Cristina Mora traces the commercial, political and cultural interests that colluded in the 1970s to create a national Hispanic identity and, in turn, boosted the political clout of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans and other Latin Americans in the United States.

A Mexican American from Los Angeles, Mora completed her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and her graduate work at Princeton University, before returning to UC Berkeley in 2011 as an assistant professor of sociology.

With all do respect. Everything she said was wrong.
Latino is a term of all the races and countries that speak The Romance Languages (for example France, Italy, Brasil, Puerto Rico). Hispanic is a natural person who is from Spaniard ascendance. Chicano is a natural person born in the US and is from Mexican ascendance. If this is from a real University shame on them for spreading false history.

The term "Hispanic" excludes Brazil (at least 1 million brazilians live in the US). Brazilians are latinos.

The information in this video is so incorrect. We latinos are defined by a common cultural identity, and a share language, be Spanish or Portuguese (these two are mutually intelligible). The term Hispanic makes no sense, as it tries to categorize a cultural group of people as an ethnic one. Would a Latino of full german descent be considered Hispanic?

In a society that is so focused on making everything and everyone seem equal so nobody feels left out or gets their feelings hurt, her message is that the differences make us who we are. I find that outlook very refreshing. With the amount of Political Correctness we have shoved down our throats on a daily basis, the view of what makes each person unique is getting overseen more and more every day in the name of not offending anyone.

Central and South americans are neither Latinos (Ancient people from Latium, near Rome) or Hispanics (Hispania, Roman name given to the Iberian peninsula). They are a mix of various etnicities whose major common trace is speaking Portuguese or Castillian (the true geographically Hispanics) and sharing a large portion of cultural and genetic Native American heritage.

The term "Chicano" was dropped in the middle of this profile video (approx. 1.22) but there no given definition of 'Chicano' as distinct from 'Latino' and 'Hispanic'.

Please, enlighten me. Thanks.

Hispanic does Not mean Latino, hence why they are two completely different terms. Real Hispanics are Spaniards aka the descendants of Hispania aka Spain. and Real ethnically Latino people are those of prominent Mediterranean Italian descent and of prominent Mediterranean Latin European origins in general. Americans and the erroneous Anglo language have misappropriated and culturally bastardized the Italian Latin European terms and identity which has contributed to the cultural erasure of actual Latin people and the proper historically accurate usage of the Italian Latin term Latino. Native Americans who were colonized by Latin European countries have absolutely nothing to do with being Latino, the same way everyone in “Anglo” America are not all Anglo Saxons, it would be equivalent to calling the indigenous Americans of North America “Anglo Saxons” simply because they were conquered and ruled by the English people. It’s an abhorrent cultural/ historical mutilation to call non Latin people of south Central America and Mexico the false, misappropriated term Latino/Latin”. You can Not be part of an origin, history and ethnicity which your ancestors factually are Not historically responsible for. “Latinx” is just more of the typical American/ Anglo languages misappropriation and bastardization of Italian Latin European terms and identity. THE TERM LATINO, LATINA, LATINI, LATINE ARE ALL LATIN TERMS THAT ORIGINATE IN ITALY! TERMS CREATED BY US FOR US ACTUAL LATIN PEOPLE! ITALIANS ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WITH THE SURNAME LATINO AND LATINI WHICH IS OF ITALIAN ORIGIN ONLY BECAUSE ITALIANS ARE THE REAL ETHNICALLY LATINO PEOPLE!

What a shame that this so called scholar can't see the genocidal impact on us Nican Tlaca, when she helps impose these colonial labels on us.  Why can't we be united with one of OUR names like Nican Tlaca, which means "the original inhabitants of this continent, mixed or not?  Shame on you G. Cristina Mora.
