The moon is said to have arisen from the &/ OR at the time of the churning of the Milky Ocean.
It was during which Goddesses Alakshmi (also shown as an Owl denoting spirituality) and Goddess Lakshmi (for prosperity) both arose, because of which the moon Chandra is also called the brother of Goddess Lakshmi.
Also arose the Halahala poison which Lord Shiva drank making his throat blue, and the Amrita the heavenly immortality potion for which the churning of the milky ocean was actually done.
During the distribution of this Amrita to the Gods, the Titan/ demon Swarnabhanu cheated the Gods and stole a part of the potion for himself.
Sun and Moon seated on either side of him detected his disguise & complained to God Vishnu who tried to kill Swarabhanu by throwing Sudharshani Chakra at him.
As he had already consumed immortal potion he only severed in two and did not die. The 2 parts became Rahu & Ketu and till today take revenge on Ravi & Chandra (Sun & Moon) by eclipsing them.
