The Last Lecture (2021)

At the medical school where I teach, there’s a tradition that the graduating class votes for faculty to provide their last lecture of medical school. It’s an incredible honor to be selected, and I thought hard about what the last lesson of medical school *should* be for the Class of 2021.

I decided to talk about humility.

This is a version of the talk I gave to the class, and while it was very deliberately designed for that specific audience, I hope that there will be some points that resonate more broadly.

NOTES:

1) Believe it or not, I actually got to give the Last Lecture in 2020, also. It’s online here:

2) The skyline pictured on the opening and closing slides is Norfolk, Virginia, as seen from the Elizabeth River.

Music: “Clutch,” by Nicolas Major.

Sage words from a very wise educator! Thank you so much for this!
I am about to graduate in ~2 weeks, both scared and excited to start intern year. Your remarks brought back so many memories from pre-med and medical school. I have been chasing the next step since my pre-med days and have never really stopped to ponder the mental and physical effects of my journey. Luckily, I have sometime before intern year to do just that.
