Thank you for this! I think a lot of people are more likely to donate to a non-profit because it seems more “legit” (plus they may want that tax write off) but I totally agree that mutual aid funds, especially within your community, are the best option, and most effective in making sure your donation goes to the people or cause that need it

having worked for multiple non-profit organizations, I can say that even the employees have usually been convinced that the reason why they aren’t paid fair wages and are expected to deal with an unreasonable workload is because all the cash flow from the organization is going “back into the community”. It’s like, sure I’m not getting paid enough money to comfortably cover my living expenses, but that’s because the money that should be going in to my paycheck is feeding the poor/stopping climate change/providing health services etc. it’s easier to cope with being exploited if you feel like you’re making a sacrifice for your community, and the rich people sitting on stacks of cash at the top benefit both from those people’s compassion and their sense of purposeless under capitalism. gross.

“And in my opinion, *nothing* should be run like a business.”
Yes.

Having worked at a non-profit, I've literally been yelling this for years. You have no incentive to make an actual change when run like a business! No one works to go out of business.

I've worked at non-profits for the last three or so years, and I've done everything from interning to canvassing to lobbying. It's all bullshit, the goal is to keep the lights on and keep their workers fed. It's a lot of the time, at least with us, not ill intention but the fact that if things improve too much then a hundred or so people will be out of a job. It truly is fucked.

Suddenly quitting my non profit job 5 minutes into the day in 2019 was the best thing I’ve ever done.

I'm not even American yet I've a taste of how predatory some US non profits can be (I'm looking at you, CollegeBoard). The SATs are expensive and they jack the price up for east Asian students. They charge you for sending scores to colleges (getting a few numbers from a database and send it over the Internet to a school) and not only that they sell your personal data to other people as well. CollegeBoard is one of the most profitable organizations out there I can't believe they are actually a non profit.

Agree, I just found out the CEO for the ASPCA makes 840k a year, and gives only 7% to the local shelters (SPCA).

After seeing the website that shows the nonprofits that receive billions in grants, I am starting to all nonprofits taxpayer grants ceased today.... The nation's cash flow would cease. It is too big. Even Global. Scary.

I'm a geezer, and I am SO.HAPPY. that there are at least a few younger people out there who are learning what an evil force Ronald Reagan was, and continues to be.

Absolutely, I quit my nonprofit job at the beginning of the pandemic and I may never go back. Things got toxic because we were chasing the foundation dollars and then lost huge grants. They laid off people and I picked up most of the extra work. I couldn’t deal with it anymore.

As a social worker I am done with old ways. I am starting my own furniture consignment store and doing my own scholarships each year. I will just directly take it off my profits and have teens write an essay for it and award it. The end. Kids going into a trade school. The kid, if they continue with education I will probably award each year they need money for books and tuition. Maybe ask them to write a thank you note and put it in the paper. No fancy dinner or banquets necessary.

Love this Kelgore! You pulled a lot of pieces of the puzzle together. Being a social worker must be the most frustrating work on the planet.

All they do is launder money, and the reputations of rich people. Stephanie McMahon (chief brand officer of WWE) quoted "philanthropy is the future of marketing, it's the way brands r going 2 win"

I hope more people see this. People seriously need to stop relying on nonprofits for charity.

10/10 getting laid off from my non profit job during the pandemic is the best thing that ever happened to me.

i've worked for nonprofits for the majority of my adulthood. i love them, but there are SO MANY PROBLEMS w/ them and w/ the system that upholds them. i would still rather take a local nonprofit job (I worked for a food panty for a few years and i saw the direct result of food donations in the community) then some other for-profit company. however, nonprofits are not excused from abuse and exploitation. ppl just haven't picked up on it as much, yet. and i think that's starting to change, hopefully!
