Does Modi 3.0's first budget kickstart India's transformation into a developed nation?

India's world-beating growth has bypassed many of its citizens. Joblessness, price rise and income inequality almost cost Prime Minister Narendra Modi a historic third term. Modi has vowed this first budget, presented on July 23, will kickstart India's transformation into a developed nation by 2047.

Join Menaka Doshi, author of Bloomberg's India Edition newsletter, in a special online discussion with Sajjid Z. Chinoy, chief India economist at J.P. Morgan as they assess the budget fine print.

This lady saying "unable to win a mandate on its own" as if that's a poor showing. Lady, a party last won a mandate on its own in 1984. Certainly none of the opposition parties have ever won a mandate on their own since 1984.

Somebody needs to edit the videos. You can’t have a full four minutes of silence at the start

China is declining.
India 🇮🇳 is projected to become a developed nation in 25 years.
- At the same time, third-world China will become a second North Korea.

BJP in NDA has more seats than Congress in UPA-1&2. So, BJP has better mandate than that Congress had. BJP, like Congress, will likely complete their 10 years.

China has a huge trade surplus with India. What can India do to balance the trade?

Somehow the ratings agencies keep changing the tune every time. In 2015-16, they said that CAD was too high. When CAD came down, they said Fiscal deficit is too high. Now we are being told Debt to GDP is too high. They keep changing the reason for upgrading India's sovereign rating.

India is in a great position to challenge China by having and publishing a well managed promoting for manufacturing and human safety that does not exist in China. China is quite willing to let industry take advantage of foreign investors. When I look into laws and contracts as a Two business with India, I find systems are already built to protect both their workers and my purchase.

Great insights and clarity from Sajjid Chinoy. Clarity in thought and speech.

Menaka Doshi was very inaudible and her questions were a strain to catch. She needs to use a mic in future podcasts. That should not be an issue in her studio/office.

India should encourage setting up manufacturing on a large scale base to provide employment to youth as well as reduce imports from China, even if government may have to financially support these ventures by Foreign investors.

Certainly the leadership and business leaders have far better sense than to turn manufacturing into a labor generating enterprise, when the right thing to do is to max-out productivity.

Don't look at your phone in between a recorded episode! Gosh, it's so unprofessional.

Except the pampered govt employees, elders in India have to finance their social security. Rather than helping them, this unelected, hence insensitive Finance Minister removed whatever little tax benefits they had under Old Tax Regime, deny them Standard deduction in income from interest which most non-govt retirees use to meet their needs.
This is plain insensitive and sadistic to the older population. That is why Finance Ministers have to be elected to be answerable to the voters

These commentators should stop cheerleading poorly designed experiments on job creation. Going by their past track record, this government will never admit their idea did not work. It will be at least five years before any course correction will take place. India will miss the bus by then - demographics is a time sensitive thing and we can ill afford more stupid ideas - time is running out.
