Fuji Sekai Gi Review

Design

Sekai means world, and the major graphic element of this gi is visible when you open up the jacket. The print on the inside features the biggest jiujitsu locations on the planet: Southern California, New York, Rio, Abu Dhabi and Tokyo. It will fade and wear off over time, but it looks fantastic. The outside of the jacket features red contrast stitching, red trim and red seam tape. The shoulders have Sekai and kanji lettering embroidered onto them. The upper back of the gi features the Fuji logo. The pants also have the red contrast stitching and seam tape along with the Sekai embroidery. Overall, this is one beautiful looking gi.

Fit and Feel

I'm 5'8" and 160 lbs, and the A2 fits me perfectly. I love the cut of this gi. And the pants are by far the most comfortable pair of ripstop pants I've ever felt. They're almost fluffy, if that makes any sense, and the thigh to ankle knee reinforcements are made of a soft, smooth cotton. As you can see by the graphic to the left, shrinkage was minimal after a cold wash and machine dry. The sleeves and pants came up to just where I'd want them.

Build Quality

The Sekai is ready for battle. It has armpit and oversized side vent reinforcements on the jacket, and the pants have side vent and crotch reinforcements. That along with triple stitching along major stress zones means you'll be able to go to war in this gi and come out just fine. Well, the gi will be fine, but I can't vouch for you. Inside the jacket Fuji covers the big seam that runs from the chest all the way to the end of the sleeves with a soft cotton strip. Even the inside edge of the collar is covered. With or without a rash guard, this is a sturdy, comfortable gi.

In Action

This gi is a real joy to roll in. This is the second Fuji gi I've reviewed, and I'm constantly impressed by their products. I think these are my new favorite pair of pants, and the jacket is an excellent combination of lightweight material and a sturdy, moderately thick collar. I feel very mobile and able to move at will in the Sekai, breaking grips wasn't a problem, and the collar is sufficiently comforting that I'm not paranoid of too-easy chokes. Plus, it looks great. Can you tell I'm a fan?

Conclusion

I've already suggested this gi to a couple of training partners who wanted a recommendation for a solid, lightweight, competition ready gi. The way it fits me, the quality design, the light weight and the absolute bombproof build quality... the Sekai might be my choice for Pan Ams this year. Whether you're looking for that new tournament gi, or you simply want a high-quality, lightweight kimono that'll endure, the Fuji Sekai is an awesome option.

I love the vulkan ultra light gi's as they breathe well and I don't feel like I'm wearing a carpet. Is this comparable to the Vulcans?

Will this Gi shrink and is it a "true size"?   I'm 5'10" 175-180lbs so I would normally fit into an A2 but I've gotten their basic 100% cotton gi in a size A3 in the past.  After some washing and drying, the Gi shrunk to an almost perfect size A2 fit.  I guess the question is, should I repeat this, or just go ahead and get the A2?  Thanks and great review.

When you say machine dry what heat setting you using ? My weight and height is exactly the same as yours so I plan to get a A2 too. And I wanna use the dryer because I just don't got time to hang dry it. But I really don't want to shrink it too much from the dryer.
