I think I've finally figured out the words to describe Kamala's strategy, at least in Australian terms (as the US doesn't have enough vocabulary for it). Kamala is chasing the Teal vote, and is hoping the equivalent of the Labor and Greens vote will also fall to her because she's at least better than the Republicans (equiv of the LNP + One Nation + Palmer). The Teals did really good at pulling away vote share from the LNP in white suburban areas in Australia, but there's a reason they _only_ ran candidates in those areas, and ran as independents rather than Labor candidates. Kamala is doing the equivalent of running as a Teal under the Labor banner. This may pull some of the more politically aware voters on the GOP side, but that party affiliation is going to make it hard for those voters to trust her regardless (even if that lack of trust is built on the lie that the Dems/Labor are bad on the economy).
All the while, she's angering the equiv Greens voters who are a growing proportion of the electorate as Millennials and Zoomers come of voting age. And unlike Australia, there's no compulsory voting to _force_ people to make a preference choice between Red and Blue. Which means she's leaving a lot of potential voters on the table. And for context, being a non-FPTP system, the Greens have about 12% vote share across the country and are likely to push Labor into minority government next cycle.
Of course, a lot of those equiv Greens voters will still show up for Harris in the US, so it's not like she'd get a 12% swing _just_ by appealing to them. But Kamala doesn't have the same advantages the Teals had by super-targeting seats without party baggage. There's a lot more to gain by getting the equiv Greens out to vote than in getting equiv Teals to break from their history to vote for the Dems over the GOP
