I would like to be a dedicated writer someday, and my biggest inspiration for "which way to go with my stories" is Tolkien. He did the perfect combination of talking about the Bible in such a creative way that anyone could read it and be truly inspired by the deep messages behind each character.

Art can be odd and weird BUT not dark. When it comes across loaded with darkness even if it's beautiful it will seen off. If odd or weird art is loaded with light and goodness we'll see it as different. The human instinct knows evil and darkness no matter how it's dressed. We will also never have 'semanticize' a situation to give benefit of the doubt if the art was actually wholesome no matter how different it was. These people had a world stage to give the very best representation of their culture and country and this is what they chose. They don't deserve consideration. They did it with their eyes wide open and with intentions so clear that it can't be defended.
