Hearing someone say that leaving crop residue on a field is bad breaks my Conservation Ag heart. While yes it could be good to convert some crop residue into biochar, removing all crop residue from a field can have multiple adverse side-effects. If all the plant matter is removed, there's nothing left to protect the soil. This means that both wind and rain have a much higher chance to cause top soil erosion. And once top soil is gone, there isn't an easy way to get it back. In addition to that, leaving plant matter on the field to break down actually helps improve soil health by adding nutrients and organic matter back to the soil, as well as helping to improve water infiltration which can recharge groundwater. And if the crop happens to be something that fixes nitrogen, leaving the crop residue on the field can have the added benefit of helping reduce the amount of synthetic fertilizer that has to be used in the future

More good news, as of the first of August residents of Leeds can now recycle glass in their green bin. Before this they had to take it to recycling banks. With this change they can lower their emissions and recycle more at the same time. Good stuff

This, the lung cancer therapy story just injected a huge dose of hope into my, and very many others' lives. I have Emphasema, from smoking, as well as being born in the middle of the last century, peak air pollution and ozone hole period. I'm also HIV+ and any news in the cancer treatment world is sometimes a rebound of research that didn't pay off as effectively, in either direction....or cross-speciality synergies of research.

The level of breakthrough this story alone represents is monumental.

Great news on all fronts - I was especially glad to hear about the banning of trawling; it indiscriminately catches and destroys everything in a weighted net's path - coral reefs, untargeted marine life, turtles, you name it. They go so deep as to dredge up mammoth bones on a regular basis in the Channel, so I really hope the UK follows suit soon!!

It can be used to make super strong Jute rope for shipping and making fishing nets.
