The new Sony Xperia 1 VI is here and there are a lot of big improvements for the phone like upgraded camera, better battery, better cooling and heat management, better quality screen and better brightness, and new speakers, but sadly the 21:9 aspect ratio is gone and so is the 4K screen, and now it's only 1080p.

Pretty much everything has been upgraded as one would expect with a new model (newest SOC, optimized speakers, battery etc.). HOWEVER, the screen has been downgraded to make it more mainstream which I wouldnt have had a problem with IF they lowered the price accordingly. This phone currently costs €1400 !! in the Netherlands 😅😅

1080p in 2024... I love my Mark 5. But this feels like a step backwards. I need at least an AMOLED on my flagship. I hope Sony prices the phone accordingly as we are no longer paying for the 4k premium screen and the unique aspect ratio.

So glad I got the 1 V a few days ago... I saw the screen and aspect ratio was changing for the worse on the 1 VI... Was a no brainer to get the V instead.

The upgraded headphone DAC is what I want to know more about. This always bugged me about the Xperia line. The DAC was always average. This is the Walkman company. It's a flagship phone and they went out of their way to include a headphone jack. Not having a premium DAC just boggled my mind. I'm hoping this is what "upgraded" means.

Well one good thing about the 1vi, it makes the 1v look even better 😬

The biggest disappointment imo is the resolution change. Maybe many people can't notice the difference but I can. QHD should be the minimum, especially in high end phones.

Sat here watching dune in 4k on my mk v, mmm not sure if this is really an upgrade...

I think no one complains about the screen if they drop the price. The no price drop can harm it.

Personally i always thought 4k on a 6 or 7 inch display was a waste of battery and processong power . But they definitely should have went 1440p if they're charging as much as or more than an iPhone max and s24 ultra
This thing is doa already in the states ...typical sony pricing themselves out of the equation.

I own the Xperia IV and I've had a Sony phone since the Z1. I've never complained about their update decisions and design choices. However, I have some major issues with the VI.

I love the 21:9 ratio, in my hands it fits comfortably and watching movies on it is a dream. The move away from 21:9 is a disappointment but it's something I can live with.

The move from 4k to 1080p however is absolutely disgraceful. For a phone that costs £1299 and is a flagship for 2024, I expect at least a QHD display to be in line with what Samsung and Apple offer.

I have no idea what Sony were thinking. If Sony doesn't put a QHD display on the VII then I will have to consider going with another brand. A real shame.

I like how they advertised a 4k 120fps recording on a phone that no longer can properly play 4k 120fps content lmao

I upgraded from 1 iv to 1 vi. Wanted to upgrade to 1 v back then but thought my phone is relatively new so i get the 1 vi instead.

As far as resolution goes, you dont honestly see the downgrade. The new screen pixel density is so great you cant see the pixelation. I've played 4k video side by side, literally no difference in pixelation. both are already above retina display. Not even in text you'd be able to see them. The only thing that i can notice is when you screenshot something. But i know it might sucks for people who watches a lot of movies because lots of them are in 21:9. But for gamers, vloggers and other 16:9 users, this is a blessing indeed. At the end of the day, even if we record content for youtube or any other media, people are still going to watch it on 19.5:9 phone anyways. I dont think there's many people who'd want to record 21:9 for media consumption. Does dual app suffers? Nah. Not really. 19.5:1 doesnt really differ much from 21:9 in terms of dual app. If you have chrome and whatsapp side by side between 4k and 1080p+ display in dual app configuration, there's barely extra line that you can read on the 4k screen. horizontally or vertically.

Other than that, everything is an upgrade. One that surprises me is the audio dac. while in 1 iv it hasnt got the proper power to drive a hifiman edition XS, this time is plays louder. But honestly i think only the voltage changes, not so much the ampere. Good thing for audiophile.

Thanks for all the spec details.

I am not ready to change from the 1 mark V as there are several steps downwards. I use two physical SIMs outside the US where eSIM is still rare. The screen changes are cost savings it seems.

While Sony has made some questionable decisions here for the Xperia 1 VI such as not having a 4K screen change, lack of notification LED, dimension ratio change etc....

I think perhaps Sony could be saving these legacy features for a Pro model later in the year. Because the Xperia 1 VI is not giving me that true flagship vibe so far unlike it's predecessors when launched.

As bad as I want to buy this phone. I can't because I strongly feel after all the negative feedback about the 4k being gone. The 4k will be back next year on the Xperia 1 mark 7.

3 years of updates is the minimum but I still think it's too expensive for just 3 😢😂

Downgraded the display from 4K to 1080p but still increase the price.

I heard 4k cannot do variable refrest rate. That's why they choose 1080p. It looks like they want to achieve battery last longer rather than sharpness.

I also think they want to make the price same as last year. If this phone is 4K with all of this stuff, I think it's gonna be more expensive.

I wonder if 21:9 4K is gonna only available for Pro version later.

Hmmm I like others are a bit shocked regarding the screen resolution .. I've just got the 1 v and I was going to return it and wait for the 1 vi but not now ... I really like the aspect ratio of the 1v anyway . Of course there are good upgrades to the 1 vi but what do you look at most on a phone ? The screen of course . Sony, what have you done ?
