It's funny when you realize Legolas has more dialogue in the books than in the films, though most of it is still not with the hobbits. Nearly every line he has is either directed to Gimli, Aragorn, or Gandalf. I like to think he doesn't know how to talk to hobbits because his father never lived down the personal embarrassment of Bilbo Baggins happening (this was my headcanon prior to them shoehorning Legolas into the Hobbit films when he was never present in the book).
