0:45 Snoring: A common conception about pugs is that it's normal for them to snore. This is NOT true. People think it's cute, when, in actuality, it's a sign of a very serious condition that can take years off of a pug's life and detract from their quality of life, called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BCOS). This is where the soft pallet hangs so low that it covers the airway when they inhale, the nares are too narrow, the tongue is too big, and the sinuses are too small. Other symptoms include activity intolerance, heavy, noisy breathing while awake, hoarse voice, burping, hiccups, vomiting, eye drainage, heat intolerance, and excessive panting. And, this doesn't just occur in pugs; any dog or cat can get it, but, mainly dogs and cats that have a brachycephalic (smashed in) face get it. The treatment for this early on is to surgically trim the soft pallet and open the nasal passages up. Dogs who have a more advanced case may need a stoma, or hole, made in their trachea to help them breathe unobstructed. So, please, if your dog snores, do not hesitate to have him/her evaluated for BCOAS. Treatment will add years to their life.
