My school of thought is based on science. The skin is a huge organ and only cm's in depth. The eye's are organs. They are vital. Why? Hypovolemic shock. The airway trachea esophagus and adjacent areas such as internal/external jugular (cm's). The radial/ulnar vessels will have someone hemorrhaging quick. Other things to consider, size of the person. Understanding concepts such as circulatory and hypovolemic shock. If a slash only managed it wouldn't be the #1 cause in laceration related suicides. I understand you have been taught and I respect that. I have also been taught through 20 years of trauma/emergency work. To sum it up, run from a "knife fight". I dont understand how you define a knife fight? I dont know if the physician is a cardio thoracic surgeon, a trauma surgeon, or emergency room physician? You would also have to consider pneumo's, tamponades, highly vascular splenic lacerations. I hope this stimulates a bit of thought. God bless.
