Hoses | Product Breakdowns

Hi everybody, welcome to Simply Scuba, So, hoses. Until somebody invents a hoseless regulator we’re going to need a variety of hoses for our scuba diving ways but there are a few alternatives and one common pitfall that some divers fall into. There are three basic parts to a hose and of course they come in different lengths, and in this video I’m going to explain all of your choices so if you’re new to scuba, you can better pick the right hose.

I prefer the flexibility of braided hoses, in the water and even more when packing my dive bag for a trip. One point that might better be mentioned is that the first generation of braided hoses often were made of polyester on the inside. These tended to build chrystals that in worst case could block the airflow. Today's braided hoses have a polyether lining which is safe. So if you buy a used regulator with older braided hoses, check out what they are made of or replace them.

Good information nicely presented might have been good to mention on Poseidon second stage hoses have an over pressure valve in the hose. If you use an adapter for Poseidon second stages to use a standard hose then then an over pressure valve needs to be fitted to one of the first stage LP ports.

Hello and happy New Year! I've heard that rubber hoses are better for cold water, but I've only heard it once, and the reason was odd: internal air friction is supposedly higher on rubber hoses, which warms the air as you breathe. This seems like it would increase the work of breathing unacceptably while providing little benefit, but as a cold water diver, I'm always looking for tricks to stay even a tiny bit warmer. Any thoughts on the thermal differences between hose types?

You say rubbber hoses are 'stronger' than braided ones. That depends how you define strong. Braided hoses are more damage resistant since cuts are typically restricted to one or two strands of the braid, whereas even a shallow cut or crack in a rubber or other solid hose can propagate and lead to complete failure. The flexibility of the braids also means that they themselves will be less liable to fatigue cracking while their tensile strength allows a more elastic inner, again more resistant to damage from even quite tight kinks.

Unless you contact Aqualung. They will merely tell you to visit a local dealer. It took me 5 emails before I finally got them to tell me what part number I needed to convert my 1st stage from yoke to DIN. Why? They told me to visit a local dealer, they tried to get me to mail it in to an authorized dealer, and then they finally gave me the info I wanted after the 5th email explaining my lack of interest in visiting an authorized dealer in my area.
