Companion Planting | Simple way for a more productive garden

About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep chickens and Aylesbury ducks.

It was so lovely to see the garden in full bloom at a time of year when all there seems to be is mud - and snow! I'm looking forward to learning more about companion planting for the coming season and seeing just how you will be incorporating it at Byther Farm. Thanks for asking me Liz - it was a real pleasure!

Excellent video. My vegetable garden is in between my flower garden and my succulent garden. I also plant marigolds and chrysanthemums in my veggie beds. 💚

I’ve been companion planting for years & apart from the plants benefitting from each other I like the look of flowers between vegetables. I only last year heard of tomatoes & asparagus being companions so this season have planted a few tomatoes amongst the asparagus. Great video thanks Liz & Jane.

I do both types of gardening. I start off planning and very quickly fall by the wayside and go full intuitive.

Last year was my first year growing a vegetable garden. I was so busy concentrating on the veg I didnt know anything about companion planting. Late in the summer I added marigolds to the vegetable beds and apart from being beneficial the joy the beauty of the flowers encourages me to spend more time in the garden. This year I am planning on adding flower beds around the vegetable garden and am so looking forward to seeing it develop. 💞

I've been companion planting for years and one of my favourites is marigolds! I just tuck them in near my tomatoes or any old spot I can find. This year I grew a wonderful variety called 'Spanish Brocade' and it went ALL summer right until the frost took it out. Very minimal deadheading required. I wonder if I had, if it would have gotten bigger than it did? It grew across about a foot or just over. I dried a bunch of seed to give to friends this Christmas and I hope to plant many more and try plant dyeing with them.

This year I'm hoping my calendula take off. I didn't start them ahead last year and so they were smothered by weeds. I can't wait to see what happens in your garden this year Liz!
