The Samosely, which means self-settlers, is the given name to the people who returned to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone after the 1986 disaster. The radiation in the Chernobyl exclusion zone is often misunderstood, but the reality is that people have and continue to illegally live in this radiated zone, despite the increased cancer risks. But this comes at a consequence of modern living standards, like ease of access to medicine, electricity, and food.

Despite the existing radiation, there seems to be little effect on the longevity of these residents who have persisted here for over 30 years.

But there are strategies the Samosely take to reduce their exposure. For example, many do not use the existing soils for farming which contain higher traces of lingering radiation from the Chernobyl disaster. This means the food they grow and consume in the region is less likely to be contaminated, especially if the soil is not being disturbed.
