Lasted from the 1st of July to the 18th of November 1916
The Somme offensive, was a major battle fought in World War 1 which included the armies of the British empire and the French against the German empire. It was deemed barley a victory for the allied powers the purpose for the battle was to relieve pressure off the French and wear down German defense. Three million men would participate in the battle one million men would be either killed or wounded making it one of the deadliest battles in human history the losses were staggering for the allies 420, 000 casualties for the british and 200, 000 for the French. The Germans on the other hand only had 440, 000 casualties. The British would suffer a devastating loss from Foucaucourt-en-Santerre south of the Somme to Maricourt on the north bank and by the fourth army from Maricourt to the vicinity of the Albert-Bapaume road. The British would suffer 60, 000 casualties in just one day becoming the worst day in the history of the British army due to the ineffectiveness of the artillery barrage which barley damaged German positions allowing machine gun's to mow down the incoming British infantry.
