How to avoid layoffs: become the last programmer on earth

People were saying programmers aren't needed when visual basic was created in the 90s

*Tired:* "Drop that art or creative writing degree and take up coding to validate my -shattered dreams- life choices."
*Wired:* "CS is dying (and I'm determined to be Will Smith from _I Am Legend")_
💫 *_Inspired_* 💫: "All boot camps are worthless... except mine! And if you sign up yourself and a friend, you'll get 30% off your subscription fee!"

Dude geez, start a comedy career... mostly also because I don't want you to be applying for tech roles 😂

Real talk though, if you want to code, do it for industries besides tech. Big tech is a garbage industry that thrives off of bubbles, just apply to be the in-house guy who learns how all the legacy systems work at a bank or something.

Ah the old “don’t get in so there will be more for me”. As someone in tech, I approve this message 😂

I have always been immensely pleased at the low take up of STEM degrees. As a mediocre programmer I really appreciate the considerateness of everyone who opts for media studies.

I have a Masters Degree in MIS. The best thing I ever did, was leave the tech industry about 11 years ago, and became a PLC Automation/Industrial Electrician, still get to use my software skills, however I actually get to physically see this talents being put to use on machines everyday. Very fulfilling. My personal advice, if you can code, in C/C++/C#, you will have no problems understanding PLC systems, look into it folks. Also helped, I knew how to wire up a 480v motor, and various other devices as well, so learn that too.

I got my current job as IT support and over time created a developer role within the company from my contributions and now I get to do a mix of both and I love it.

The problem is not that a particular job has 20 applicants. The problem is that 20 is considered a low number. 5% odds of getting a job is considered VERY GOOD ODDS.

Dang, you’re like the 21st person this week that told me not to go into tech. YouTubers are so wise! Glad I took this advice.😊

This is exactly why I tell people to not learn to code if they don't want to, but I come at it from a different angle. I say "if you love coding and you'd do it anyways, 100% get into it. If you're just getting in to get rich, get out. You'll not only hate your life, you'll be middle class at best, and definitely unemployed in the current job market." Best of all, my story is true without the bit at the end where you just tell them you'd like less competition.

I think 20 years ago was a good time to get into IT. There's just so much stuff now, and jobs want you to have experience that you can't possibly have if you just graduated.

New idea: learn to weld. Less competition and you'll have all the equipment you need to Mad Max your vehicle in the dystopian near future.

Took Spouse a year, A YEAR to get a job. And he's a Good Sr Software dev.
He got through an entire 3 interview processes per month, with hundreds of applications.
----he was doing well, cuz he got 3 to-the-end interviews per month, instead of 1 every 4 months.

Also, a lot of those were interviews were for companies that just wanted to look like they were hiring so tgeir staff would keep work extra hours for no more money
