A Teenage Masterpiece by Bill Evans: The Legendary "Very Early"
This piece, while having a simple melody, is adorned with impeccable harmony built upon a highly challenging and nuanced chord progression. Its sophistication evokes the spirit of modern European classical music.
When I first discovered Bill Evans, I was immediately drawn to this piece and devoted myself to studying it. Bill himself continued to refine his approach to this composition and performed it throughout his life. Though the harmony of the piece is already perfect, I attempted to add a slightly altered dimension to it, bending time and space just a little in my arrangement. I hope you enjoy listening to it.
The photos used in this video were taken by me in Tokachi, Hokkaido. There, the air is clear, and a profound silence pervades. It feels as though time stands still. I believe this piece shares a similar sense of tranquility.
On Sunday, January 19, 2025, I will be holding a solo piano concert titled "Dialogue with Bill Evans vol.3". This time, I plan to take on compositions by Bill's favorite composers, many of whom were close to him or whose works he cherished as part of his repertoire.
The venue is Kobo Hanaya in Setagaya, Tokyo. This unique space, nestled in a quiet residential area, combines the scent of flowers, antique furnishings, and the harmony of music—a perfect setting to lose track of time. Please join me for an unforgettable concert experience. I look forward to seeing you there!

Bill Evansの10代の頃の習作。そして名曲となった"Very Early" この曲はシンプルなメロディーであるが、大変解釈の難しいコードプログレッションによる非の打ちどころの無いハーモニーが施されている。あたかも近現代のヨーロッパの音楽かのようだ。私もBill Evansを知ってすぐにこの曲が弾きたくなり研究をしたものだった。Bill本人もこの曲へのアプローチをバージョンアップさせて生涯弾き続けた。完璧なハーモニーがある曲だが、それに敬意を払いながら少し時空を曲げるような角度をつけたハーモニーにアレンジして弾いてみた。ぜひ聴いてみて欲しいと思います。 この動画で使っている写真は、私が北海道の十勝で撮ったものです。ここには澄んだ空気と静寂があります。時が止まっているような感覚を覚えます。この曲も同じような空気感を持っていると思っています。 2025年1月19日の日曜日、私は"Bill Evansとの対話 vol.3"と題したソロピアノコンサートを行います。今回はBill Evansと交友関係があったりお気に入りの作曲家の作品を彼はレパートリーとして大切にしていますが、それらの曲に私もチャレンジしてみたいと思います。場所は東京世田谷の「工房花屋」というところです。閑静な住宅街に現れる異空間。花の香りとアンティークの調度品、そして音楽の調和。時を忘れるようなコンサートにぜひいらして下さい。お待ちしています。
