Poor kid, he's afraid of expressing his emotions through words because when he says it, it officially becomes reality. A terrifying reality where Eleven is the love of his life, his everything, but if he loses her he loses everything, and he's more afraid than the average teen because he really does love her and knows the feeling of losing her once, so Mike would probably rather give his own life than relive the trauma of losing El again, and so refusing to say he loves her is part of a coping mechanism that helps him deal with his trauma.

"he LOVES HER" All caps because it's true :) This mostly improvised scene, & the sauna scene of El falling in Mike's arms, just show Finn & Millie's amazing chemistry. I wouldn't mind if the Duffers just let them improvise season 4 mileven scenes because they seem to really know their characters.
