I find that just doing an easier variation of the exercise I'm going to do isn't the best or most efficient way to prepare for it.
Rather try to move the muscles you'll stress the most through a wide range of motions.
Incline push-ups would be better, if you did them with your hands on two separate things between which you can lower your body, so your range of motion is as large as possible.
Besides that it's also helpful to play around with holds in different positions including positions that won't come up during your upcoming exercise (e. g. pause at the bottom of a push-up and shift from one side to another, consciously controlling your shoulder movements throughout), to get more blood flowing in the relevant parts of your body and also wake up some muscles that are difficult to engage consciously but the activation of which would help in the exercise you're going to do.
