When you're at the gym and find where all the plates went.

had to build a bridge in elementary school, and we were going to test the amount of weight they could hold.
My dad took civil engineering at one point, and helped me built it. Made a small suspension bridge out of popsicle sticks and small pieces of wood like what was shown here, complete with bike chain suspension wires on each side.
My teacher (grade 7) dropped me 2 grades because the bike chains "are supposed to be straight, not sagging in the middle".
Anyone thats taken physics knows that those cables can never be straight on a full sized bridge, due to them having to support their own weight over several hundred yards, with gravity acting on them. Never forgot it, continues to piss me off to this day.
Edit: this doesn't keep me up at night. It makes me laugh looking back. I dont dwell on it

So well built NEXT GENERATION LEADER OF THE BRIDGE WORLD 🌎. Please, I'd love to come work for you! I'm in Australia 🦘🇦🇺, From Aussie Nick💯🇦🇺☘️🎯....

The trick is to paint tiny steel beams to look like wood

Did this in my technology class in '88. My _team's_ bridge held up about 380lbs. _We_ came in 2nd. Winners held up 425lbs. Was fun as hell.

Edited because I should have said it was teams in the first place. Not all the credit was mine.

That was incredible. Makes you appreciate that our infrastructure is capable of this. But also sad at the state our infrastructure is in.

This test demonstrates the static load of a bridge if he could concentrate the weight onto a single point that would really tell you how strong the bridge is.

That’s really impressive! You seem like the coolest teacher 😊 The brightness in students can only be sparked by intelligent, creative and passionate educators, you have taught them well 😁

Rumor has it that bruh is still adding weights in 2023.

It's all about the strength of triangles. In physics class, I had to build a bridge out of toothpicks and wood glue only. It couldn't weigh more than 50 grams and had to hold 50lbs of weight hung from in a bucket

This project in physical science made me want to become a civil engineer. Then I sucked in school and settled for land surveying.

Gym class is canceled boys. Professor fancy pants is showing off again

The only reason that’s staying up is because it’s a short distance and so the frame is more sturdy when compacted together

That bridge is stronger than all my relationships combined.

I won this challenge in school but we hung the weight from the bridge to see how much it could handle. We were only allowed to use a certain amount of popsicle sticks and glue. And today I'm an architect lol. Schools nowadays have project that don't even help you in life anymore. Like the projects are guessing people's genders and pronouns 😂😂😂

I remember doing a project on these bridges! I never fully understood the mathematics behind it, but what it comes down is that the triangles distribute the weight across the entire structure through a combination of pulling and pushing forces. Fascinating stuff!

Three kids in that gym became structural engineers. Really ripped structural engineers.

You have to try the weight not on top of the structure since the cars and trucks will not use that part, try the weight on the bottom part of structure.

A much better test of strength would be to suspend the weights at the center...rather than having the edge of the weights right over the edge of the blocks.

Umm correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a bridge designed to carry the weight on the traveled road not the on top of its entire structure
