Why I'm ditching FULL FRAME!

I've been using a full frame camera for personal and commercial photography for a number of years now, but that's come to an end. I'm moving to crop sensors full-time for all of my photography, here's why...

Aside from the weight and constantly getting stopped by security wherever I go, the image quality difference for the things I shoot is completely manageable.
Cheers,

James

I can't believe this has so many dislikes. I'm watching this with my D750 and I couldn't agree more.

I am from the future and you will switch back to full frame

It's now March 2022. This video didn't age too well, haha.

I can't stop giggling at this video. Totally can relate to this. I'm 5 feet petite female photographer and taking photos with my 5D mark iii and carrying all my gear can take a toll, (but it's sort of a happy pain). But as you said, switching to crop depends on the project you're doing.

I find this funny because I actually just switched from fuji apsc to nikon full frame. While i do do a bit of street, urban exploring, and other genres of photography that are considered to be nondescript, i don;t feel uncomfortable shooting a larger camera. The dynamic range and legacy glass have been blowing me away! I also love that the camera is heftier.

I really appreciate that you carried a 10kg medicine ball around town to pay off that gag. Well done. Also, recently joined the M43 brigade. Sold my Canon 6D for a GH5 for video and stills. I’m getting amazing results out of it. Even for photos, which is wild as everyone says it’s garbage for stills. No...it’s not. It has its limitations, but if you know them you can work around them and still get great photos. And Lumix glass is bangin’. No regrets. Let the FF fam rail. They can have the heavier gear. And the inevitable back pain that comes with it.

I love that I seem to be repeatedly getting recommended this video now, even after watching it, with how many of your new videos are around the S5 :p

I agree, I moved to Medium & Large format digital years ago. Nothing like 150 to 220 megapixels.

At the risk of fanning the flames, I agree. I recently bought my first "old" MFT camera -- an Olympus E-P3, which I'd intended to use just for video. For higher resolution and color depth I planned to keep using my Sigma DP2 Quattro (speaking of controversial subjects!) Like you, most of my shots are taken in daylight. Frankly, I was shocked how much I enjoy using the little Olympus. I got their 50mm equivalent f/1.8 prime (136 grams!) and it produces wonderful shots. The Sigma is great but I have to keep it at base ISO and use a tripod where the E-P3, with built-in stabilization and touchscreen focus control, is a breeze in comparison. No one was more surprise than I was, especially considering the age of the camera. I plan on getting the Olympus 90mm equivalent f/1.8, which somehow is even lighter. That's nuts. I mean, really: a 90mm f/1.8 that weighs 116g! Prior to these I used a Sony RX1 and first-gen A99, which were both great. But the truth is, I love compact systems and get more shots with them, and the quality difference in daylight is negligible. Thanks for the video!

So relatable. I bought an expensive second hand full frame camera to take my photography to the next level... but now I don't enjoy taking my camera out with me, or if I do take it out, I take it out of its bag less!

I had used APSC DSLR for quite some time and was about to switch to full frame. Then a friend was big on m43. So I tried that also and absolutely loved it. It's so compact and lightweight. I enjoy and appreciate nature and cities more rather than just being a camera carrier. I think that's the key to good shots than a bigger sensor unless you are a professional wedding photographer or something.
Pure happiness. I can just grab it and go. And goodbye to neck&shoulder pain.

Honestly, the vast majority of people can't tell the difference between a photo taken with crop vs fullframe. Most people don't even know what APSC means lol.

I still use an 80 D and 77D with only upgrades from kit lenses.

LR/PS bridges the gap anyway between the FF/crop debate.

The way you framed each shot was so visually interesting with symmetry and shapes. I’m inspired I also feel less insecure about not having full frame

l won't switch from APS-C to full frame because of the reasons you mention. And another reason-full frame is

Hilarious that a full third of the people watching this vid are put off by the content. Who gives a crap? If you think FF is the way to go for your work, then so be it. Just because someone else says it's not for them you 'dislike' their video? Hahahaha ridiculous.
At any rate, James I just found your channel, and I love it man. Really great, down to earth, funny, real. I hope you are able to keep it going. One of the better photography-based channels I've found.

Cheers man!

Your last point. That's actually the only reason I'm upgrading my crop....but to another crop. I'm getting more work at later points in the day and need the ISO boost. However, I don't think I need to justify a full frame need, so I'm jumping to the Canon 80D. I'd say I'm at the level of Hobbyist/Pro. I shoot what I want for fun, but I often times book gigs, so that's good. I've seen the 5DIII and the 80D quality and I just don't see much difference other than using better quality lenses.

Since I can’t decide what format to shoot I’ve decided that I’m going to buy them all. Panasonic, Fuji, Nikon here I come. Or I could just stick with the Olympus, Canon and Sony that I already have. Damn.... I think I need more research! Help JamesPopsys!

Well Said James, I use a D500 for Sport and an A7Rii for portrait and landscape, I recently bought the G80/85 and was mighty impressed by it, so much so that I ordered the G9, don't get me wrong the A7Rii is pin sharp and something I, ll always keep but my soon goto unit will be the G9.... I did lust after a D850 and maybe an EM1-II but the Panasonic DFD focus was so fast I was massively impressed and it sealed the deal, that and 6K snap mode Subscribed...
