It ain't $40,000, but it is new-in-box. Let's see if the RED Hydrogen One was really the failure we thought it was.

Okay, if we're interested in digging through the smartphone failure bin (and I am...), could you do a deep dive on the Amazon Fire Phone? Like just imagine if that thing had been even half decent, or if all its weird depth sensors and cameras were actually able to achieve a personalized 3D perspective. RED, eat your heart out.

My core memory of the Red Hydrogen phone is Marques really selling it HARD. i think that was a reminder about evaluating tech products as they are with current firmware and all, and NOT on what they might get in the future.

Everyone else: pixel fold, tablet, and 7a!
Snazzy Labs: Red Hydrogen One!!!!
And that is why I love you.
I was thinking about this phone recently and it's fun to see that thought materialize.

So Jim hated the reviewers for not banking on future improvements that he promised would happen that never happened. Oof.

I think ultimately reds biggest problem is that their camera technology was to costly to apply to a smartphone and the fact that the smartphone market was already overcrowded.

The Essential Phone was a really great phone when the price dropped and software issues got ironed out a year in.

Does anyone else remember the HTC EVO 3D? This Red Phone just seems like they took that 2011 htc phone and increased the size and price.

I still remember this phone like it was yesterday. I thought it was released like 3 years ago and then I remember this is 2023.

Interesting, I remember when this came out, I totally forgot the whole phone was about the 3D screen. I get wanting to make a phone that is “different”, but man what if the company that makes cameras would have focused on making the best smartphone camera in the industry first, then maybe V02 or V03 they could have focused on the 3D stuff.

I remeber being in a Verizon store and holding one of these in my hand. It felt so solid and substantial. So very different from the delicate, slippery glass slabs that still prevail today. I was just about to buy one but decided to wait until the weekend. Then... discontinued! I dont know why but i still want one of these!

When you showed the pool robot I could not help remembering the short story Zima Blue by Alastair Reynolds and featured in Love, Death and Robots.

Good video but I wish you had more front facing shots of the devices. Its great that you are giving in depth reactions to the technology, But all I see is a off center dark screen.

Clicked so quickly. This was one of the first BIG tech flops to drop after I started to really focus on tech super closely. Shocking that this was ever even brought to market.

That was the best video I have watched on youtube in quite a while. I loved the amount of detail and angles you took with it, the editing of the different camera angles, the quality but not overly bright lighting where you shot it, your affable approach to the video and topic, the praise where it was warranted and the criticism where that was warranted.

But most of all what engaged me so much was how you presented it. I don't know if others tell you that you talk fast (although: is there some set speed, according to who, is the speed subjective to the listener, etc) - I do and people tell me often, but I also think and can listen fast as well.

I find a lot of youtube presenters' speech too slow and too drawn out for me - just get to the point! I could listen to you presenting for hours on end though. Your speech rate was dead on perfect for me personally, it kept me engaged and the flow of your speech was excellent as well, I really felt like you were talking *to* me, not just *at* me

You have a natural talent clearly as well as experience and I rarely subscribe to someone on here but I definitely want to watch more of your videos, I don't even care that much what the topics specifically are. Although tech is cool! *grins*

I got to the end of the video and my *only* regret - was that it wasn't 2-3 times as long and thus even more detailed and intricate lol. Cool topic, cool approach, stellar presentation, leave the viewer wanting more. That's a 10 out of 10 - at least for me personally.

Thank you for such a pleasant experience, I hope my comment is uplifting to read. Keep doing exactly what you are doing, it is sublime!

Saw one of these at Verizon store when new. I was floored by the 3-D effect. Way higher rez than Nintendo's 3DS... but much more expensive. Wanted, but could not afford. I suppose a bullet was dodged. I've got an iPhone XR instead and... its still my primary. I doubt I'd still be using the Hydrogen if I'd gotten it back then.

I can see a bunch of missteps in other areas since they were new to the smartphone game but having a bad camera seems unbelievable. The one thing they should have excelled at. This also serves as a cautionary tale for other companies not to get overly excited and start promising the world. Wait until your product launches and actually become successful to start talking accessories and future support. Yes I understand that's not how marketing works but still.

A good comparison will be between this Red which came out in 2018 and the Motorola phone which had a similar if not exact 3D display back in 2012 or so. It kinda just feels like Red just saw that concept a few years too late and just invested in it lol. ( I still couldn't find which Motorola model had that just remember playing with it as a friend of mine had it when it first came out.)
