How to stop hitting with an open clubface

Hitting shots to the right of the target because of an open clubface at impact is extremely common. The cause is frequently how the left wrist moves during the swing, especially through the end of the backswing and start of the downswing.

Thanks, Peter, for repairing the audio synch problems.

A pro once told me that for every degree your clubface is off square at impact, it equates to the ball being 10 metres off target. Great instructions and highlights how crucial it is to get back to square at impact. After watching this, I think my wrists are the problem. My backswing is near a carbon copy of Peter’s but I leak a lot of approaches and drives to the right.

This is great! I just shot a 44 (Stableford scoring) after watching this. I knew i had a good swing and just struggled with an open club club face. Thanks for the great visuals and demo

Not long ago I asked Jack if he preferred to address the ball with the clubface open, square or closed. Jack looked at me with that piercing stare: "I've never seen a really good player set it square or closed at address, " he said.
Then he explained that because you generally set the club so the face is one-quarter inch or so behind the ball, it needs to be slightly open to the target line at that point. If it looked square and you didn't manipulate it during the swing, when the club returned to impact it would be slightly closed, causing a hook.
Setting the clubface slightly open at address allows you to:
• Release the club fully without fear of hooking.
• Swing the club naturally with relaxed arms for maximum clubhead speed—and therefore more distance.
• Develop better feel for how the club is aligned as it swings through impact.

Jack got this from the best….Ben Hogan.

Excellent video Peter on clubhead position! I try for a vertical or 45 degree angle of the clubhead and a flat left wrist position going back and coming through. My problem sometime is the lack of forearm rotation and possibly hip rotation on the downswing. This results in "foul balls" to right. Keep up the good work Peter.! I always enjoy learning from your videos!!!

This is my worst swing fault and I just can't understand the feel. The cupping feels right, I've been searching for something that explains the feel and hopefully I can try your suggestion here this weekend.

Another great lesson and thank you Peter. I was fortunate enough to have lessons with you here in Sydney (Macquarie Range) some years ago. Now off mid singles I do struggle with this at times. Are you an advocate of the so called paddle pop stick under the watch to keep the left wrist in check? Could be a bit radical at my stage of the game, but I can get a bit bowed at times. Cheers and thank you - David

I really hope this works for me..I've recently started to hit around 4 to 7 wide open club faces per round.I thought it was my body moving too soon before my arms..Thanks Peter...Where are you based for lessons please.Regards David

At 2 minutes 57 seconds the video jumps to the top of the swing when he starts explaining a real key factor?
Has that happened for anyone else watching?
