Do We Really NEED A PS5 PRO?

Not yet confirmed but an absolute certainty is PlayStation’s mid-generation refresh. PS5 Pro will undoubtedly feature performance boosts, shorter loading times, smoother frame rates, higher resolutions, and rumours courtesy of industry analysts are pointing towards a late 2024 release window.

The question is, do we really need a PS5 Pro? Arguably, developers are still yet to push the base PS5 console to its limits, so what good does a PS5 Pro serve? Well, there’s points for and against outlined in this feature, but no matter what side of the fence you’re on its undeniable Sony – if the rumours of a late 2024 release are true – will be releasing the PS5 Pro at an inopportune time. Principally, no new existing franchise titles until April 2025 is a blow. Sony will need to drum something shiny up to showcase the improved capability of the PS5 Pro.

I find it funny that people who change their iPhone every year ask questions like this.

This has been the weirdest console generation. We’re almost 4 years with the ps5 and we’re still getting ps4 games 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nope. We didn't even need a PS5. Greed is behind these constant ps releases. The PS4 did not reach its limits. Games keep getting better graphics and less fun. They should focus on making a fun game and then decide the graphics

One thing to remember with the ps4 pro however is that newer display technology was becoming more readily available to consumers and that was used to justify and market the SKU. When the ps4 dropped in 2013, 4k tvs, Wide Color Gamuts, and native 120hz displays weren't really widely accessible AND as such the ps4 could only display SDR and up to 1080p. A firmware update enabled HDR on the OG ps4s, but nothing could be done to address the 4k and fps discrepancy as I imagine that would require new components. As those higher end tv technologies started coming down in price and becoming more widely adopted that created the market for the ps4 pro. Given the ps5 can already output images at 8k and display panels that exceed 120hz aren't easily available in Sony's biggest markets, there just doesn't exist a consumer need for the system yet. The only things a Pro could reasonably deliver at this time are upgraded wifi modules, USB 3.2 connectivity, and 5th gen nvme hardware. While the first 2 would be welcomed additions the upgrade to nvme 5 may be too soon as those drives still cost a arm and a leg for moderate amounts of storage at best. As such as there's very little that can be gained from audio/visual enhancements and the actual performance gains still require components outside of most gaming consumer's reach, dropping a ps5 pro that is nothing more than a supped up ps5 is unnecessary.

Nope. Games are still being released for the PS4, we don't need a more powerful PS5 when we haven't even fully explored what the base PS5 can do.

It would be nice to play the game with maximum performance and best graphics. Not like choosing performance vs fidelity.

Doesn't matter if there's a pro or not. If there's a pro people will buy, if no pro then it's whatever. Dunno why people say there's "no need" there's always a need for better hardware when old hardware starts aging. Yeah sure you don't want to spend more money to upgrade, but that's your problem, not Sony's

Game developers are NOT delivering games that are pushing bleeding edge tech.
The closest we can get to a game that is truly pushing boundaries is GTA6, and that isn't due for at least another year. We are also reaching a point where it's harder and harder to tell the differences in graphics, meaning that the only real noticeable difference has to do with higher framerates. So basically, all this extra power is not going to guarantee anything worth the extra cost, because game developers are still dragging their feet.
There are still games being developed for last gen consoles. The PS5 Pro is going to rely heavily on people's FOMO and delusion that this new console will magically improve games dramatically, based on nothing but marketing higher performance specs.
No doubt people will run out to buy one, but there is also no doubt those same people will be asking "where are the games?" at some point.

I don't need one. I'm still waiting for a game optimized for the regular 5. I'd rather they took their time designing the PS6 so that it actually lives up to the claims they make about it. High Def. maxed Visuals AND 60 Frames per Second.

Unless your monitor/ TV is over 100 inches, 8K is a complete scam

It’s just another option for gamers to spend more if they want. If the base PS5 gets a price cut because of a PS5 Pro then everybody wins. I don’t see how this is a bad thing for anyone. I’d be upgrading to a PS5 Pro at launch, but if it’s not for you then that’s fine too.

I dont, i am happy with the normal PS5. When i had the ps4 i buy a pro but the pro is all long gone and the normal 4 is still running, this misstake i dont make twice and keep the money on the bank for the PS6 in the future. But everybody must do what they want with there money. Greetings from the Netherlands 👍

Sony needs cash obviously... Their $80 AAA single player games as a service aren't selling... The PS5 box says "8k gaming" they lied... These games barely 4k... Fool you twice? Shame on you... Js

We didn’t need a “new” 3DS either but I’m glad we got one. I’m cool with a PS5 pro at this point as I feel PS4 waited to long to drop theirs.

Who the hell needs an 8K TV??
There's like zero 8K content available out there.
No movie streaming services in 8K.
No 8K Blue Rays either.
Only a few video's on YouTube are rendered in 8K and thats it nothing else.
Sounds like a big waste on money.

If we still have to choose between performance and graphic fidelity, then yes. A ps5 pro is needed, assuming it can end the choice!

yea 8k sure! so then we are back at the starting point, we chase the ultimate graphics and the compromise will be again performance! they should start making fun games first, then focus on the graphics... chasing 8k when we don't even have 60fps at 4k is a joke!

The jump from 1080p to 1440p or even 4k is huge... but from then on most ppl probably will not notice much of a difference anymore. So having a console that is prepared to put out 8k but already struggles (which the PS5 Pro will may be) is actually exactly the right console to play in 4k 60Hz / 120Hz. But will see if the performance is really high enough for that or if we have to wait yet another generation (PS6) for that to actually become the standard.
