In today's video, I troubleshoot an electric start problem on a Toro Recycler lawn mower. Check out how easy this fix ends up being.

My Toro mower is 13 years old electric start stopped all at once. There is a fuse at the battery connection will replace will follow your ideas. I do not
like to pull on the pull rope many times. If all else fails I have used starter fluid...one short blast, one pull mower starts. I used starter fluid for
3 years on my last mower, mower kept running but I sold the mower when I bought the torro. Never let a mower get too hot.

I thought I saw the wires reversed when you first showed the battery and then I thought…nah maybe it’s different for the Briggs vs the Tecumseh. Good job. Great explanation.

Great diagnosis . I’m old but there is a name for the centrifugal climb clutch, new subscriber. I still love to fix small engines,

LOL their issue was a bit of a freak, but thanks for your video. Too many youtubes are focussed on self promotion, music graphics and "hit my like" --- I liked your no nonsense informative approach. I recently acquired the same machine, self start button does nothing, will try to charge the battery as you showed me how to access.

I have not had much to do with electric start push mower's, but if they are maintained properly like any other mower should be, then in my opinion they would be ok.
Nice catch on the reversed polarity wiring.

I on a whim bought the battery and installed it. All I got was the motor spinning. Watched your video and exposed the starter and gears. blew out the dirt. Hit it with some WD40 pressed the blue button and golly gee the engine cranked. Watching the video was helpful in knowing to remove the gas tank for better exposure. Thanks for the help. $18 from Amazon and I got electric start mower. Course it always starts with just one slight pull of the cord but hey.

I’ve got a Toro Personal Pacer mower with the 6.75 hp B&S engine. The electric start will spin the motor but not quite fast enought to start it. It has a new 12V 7.2AH battery, fully charged, new float this year, new magneto a year ago, and valves adjusted to spec. I can spin the engine by rotating the blade by hand and with a compression tester installed, it's reading 0 psi which makes sense if the compression release mechanism is working properly. You can give it one tug on the pull start it will fire up and run perfectly. I've got an old Sears battery charger (2, 10 & 50 amp) with small connectors that I can fit on the battery. At the 10 amp setting, it's just enough extra juice to spin the motor a bit faster and start it. Today, I pulled the electric starter and added a bit of oil on the bearings. I can spin it by hand and there's very little resistance. Reinstalled and it made no difference. I'm strumped.

I have the exact same mower model. Out of the blue, the starter was experiencing the same symptoms shown here. When I went to look at it, I noticed the starter was loose. After pushing it back into position, the electric start worked. Looking further I discovered the starter's mounting screw was missing. So I just need to get a new screw of the right size so I can securely mount the starter.

It worked! The batter had died and wasn’t holding a charge. Switched that little 40 out and Shazam! Electri start fixed. 🎉

Great job. I learned a few things for sure. I think my Charger is bad. Do you know what I should be reading for DC voltage from the wall charger? I'm NOT getting 13.2V. I'm only getting like 1V. But I wasn't sure if it was some sort of "smart" charger and didn't put out any voltage without a battery connected. Thank you!

So I have the same mower. Battery is fully charged but when I push the starter button it does nothing at all. Almost as if the battery is dead. Any idea?

Great video. I was mowing my yard with my toro lawnmower and out of no where the auto push stopped working but the lawnmower was still running just fine. Do you have any advice on how to fix this?

I have the same mower. Electric start worked fine last year. This year…Won’t turn over. Not ever sure it’s charging. Is there a fuse to check somewhere?

Hey, since these are flathead engines, the valves are only adjustable via the old-school grinding method right? I had a mower with electric start that, on the compression stroke, the starter wasn't strong enough to turn the engine over. It was a new battery, but I should try to also add my booster/jumper pack and see if maybe the new battery wasn't charged enough yet. I cleaned all connections except at the push button switch on the handle.

I have the same mower. It starts easy on rope and cranks long on starter. New battery, new plug, fresh cleaned carb, new air cleaner too! Seems like it cranks slow, and the battery is at 12v. Any suggestions?

How was the starter getting any power if the leads were reversed.

10.9 Volt battery should be week enough not to start the mower. Wonder what voltage would you measure once you corrected wiring to the battery.
