The answer to the question, "Is Taiwan a part of China?" is complicated and intertwined in history, identity, and modern geopolitical dynamics. Yet, it's one that needs to be understood as tensions increase and the possibility of conflict looms. David Sacks, CFR's fellow for Asia Studies, discusses why the answer isn't so simple.

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher.

He is just stating the facts and current status of global politics. Whether you like that status or not, it is as subjective as it can be.

The U.S. is making a big mistake getting involved in this, after all our economics are tied to one another.

The only thing missed is the Key issue: Taiwan issue is an unfinished Chinese Civil War since 1949. No one dares to involve in other's Civil War for very good reason (the side in Civil War is very passionate about it). US learned, at least I hope, this lesson in Korean War, Vietnam War, Afgan War, and Iraq War.

Taiwan IS a country. If you think it SHOULD be a part of China, ok, but it's a country right now

Double speak of a politician. He knows there are two Chinas - just like bthere are two Koreas, following their civil war. There is the Republic of China (aka Taiwan) and then there is the People's Republic of China (aka Mainland China). Both claim they represent the ONE CHINA. The US and most countries on this planet recognize the PRC (Mainland) as the representative of China and Taiwan is part of China (well, its in their official name anyway: Republic of China). Why would Taiwan call themselves Republic of China, if they did not intend to be part of China???

1. The civil war forced ROC to retreat to Taiwan from China mainland, and PRC controlled the mainland, not including Taiwan island.

2. ROC(current Taiwan) stood for the representative of China before the war. But since there were two different regimes simultaneously during the war, UN required us to negotiate with each other. The leader of ROC at that time took the initiative to quit UN, because he felt like it’s such a shame that he needs to communicate with a ‘traitor’ of the country(China). Thus, PRC took over the representative of China, and other countries now recognize PRC instead of ROC due to One China Policy proposed by PRC.

3. PRC and ROC both have their own military and government system, PRC can’t and also have no power to influence Taiwan practically. (although PRC claims that it is domestic affairs lol, can Hawaii elect their own president?)

4. People need passport and visa to go back and forth between two places. Does passport required to go to Hawaii for Americans?

Most Taiwanese think there’s no need to strive for independence because we are ALREADY under a sovereignty(ROC), and its territory is Taiwan.

Both Taiwan and China share same one China under international UN. So Taiwan is a part of China forever unless Taiwan declares independent then China will used force to bring back.

The most countries don't have diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, because Taiwan isn't a country at all; the most countries don't have diplomatic relationship with the Republic of China on the island Taiwan, because the one-China policy.

Taiwan is what PRC used to be before Oct 1, 1949. In other words, historically speaking, Taiwan is a part of China. Just look at the flag, laws, founding bases. Wake up, Taiwan, it is your party (KMT) led by Chiang Kai-shek that lost in the Civil War and exiled to Taiwan Island. Time has changed!
The reason that "because we are different, we are different countries" is totally untenable. Well, think about HK(SAR) and Macao (SAR) with Mainland China, different government, system, int'l code, website, passport (or related document), flag, ... That is to say, how different btw Taiwan from Mainland China is the same way as how different btw Mainland China from HK and Macao. First, both in 1997 and 1999, their comeback should be called reunification instead of unification bc they both once belonged to China before the invasion of foreign forces. China never abandoned them on purpose. Same way as the story happened on Taiwan bc of first by Japanese in 1895. Second in after 1945, but bc of the Chinese Civil War, intl community should first let us Chinese people to decide bc it is an interal affair. (Wake up, Western world!) If Taiwan is a country, so is HK and Macao? Thus, you have to deliberate the problem from different perspective. maybe history. In USA, the law varies from state to state, let alone the ethnicity and culture. Then, can you say USA is 50 countries? In Mainland China, we have 55 ethnic minorities, with different language, culture, custom, ... Then, can you say China is composed of different countries? Well, in the past, yes, and only culturally, but not for now. (in this degree, it is like somewhat USA). Then, I want to ask you: where is Taiwanese originated? Like Monkey King, out of nowhere, or the majority of them immigrated from Mainland China? What on earth separated us Chinese for more than 7 decades? Because of the traitors in Taiwan soon after the foundation of PRC, of mastermind, restraint, and obstruction of US-led Western politicians both before and after Cold War with Cold War mentality still lingering on, and the selfishness of Taiwanese govt led by opportunists, cheaters, liars, and the manipulators of people's mentality. They spare no effort to demonize Mainland China and CPC as collude with Western power which cannot wait to see the farce and tension btw Mainland China and Taiwan so that it can benefit from the proxy war. Taiwan is used as a piece of chess to contain the rise of China while we Chinese advocate the community with a shared future for mankind and positive-sum game with mutual benefit and peaceful co-existence. Then, you have to learn the history of Chinese Civil War and then to figure out the term China, you have to learn btw different subjects bc it is a panpolitical term.

So if USA do not agreed with China that Taiwan is part of China then why don’t USA recognized Taiwan? What is wrong? Lol
