"sometimes it's hard to admit that you can get tired of something you love"

felt this not just in Genshin but in other aspects of Life.

It was so magical at first. Even has a compelling story. But 3 years into the game, and maaan, it feels like a job. haven't done any desert stories yet. I want to see some major progress with the main story but I think it wouldn't happen in the next couple years.

It’s hard to explain. It’s been 3+ years and you get tired. New things happen in life, you get new games, you get tired of waiting for new events. Even then, you sometimes forget to do daily’s. It’s almost like there’s too much to do in Genshin

I think that a really big part of people getting burned out is the lack of co op options available so it starts to seem like your doing alot of work by yourself. It would be cool if they would allow same story progression and exploration that way we could start doing things with people that way it doesn't become a chore. The only options are domain's and that not enough for some people.

When I first started in Genshin I always made an effort to take in all the lore and story presented to me, but now there's honestly such an astounding amount constantly being added, I literally do not have the energy and capacity to pay attention to the story in each new event/quest, even when I want to. I always end up clicking through the heaps of dialog just so I can get things over with.

Thank you so much for bringing this topic to the table!!

I've been playing almost daily since 1.0, but I'm not a hardcore player. I always have content to play and I do it at my own pace. But I've been struggling with this burnout for months, realising I'm playing it as a daily chore, and just some weeks ago I came to a conclusion: I still love the game, the worldbuilding, the combat system, building characters, the story and all the lore that we are barely grasping, I got caught by its universe and start playing HI3 and HSR, I'm really excited about Fontaine... But it shouldn't be hard to enjoy it: farming, grinding and building are extremely imbalanced and exhausting (resin system and consumption is crap), exploring is really enjoyable but impossible to complete, the only permanent content is hard to complete for most players, conversarions that take ages to get to the point... I know these are minor issues but I would prefer Hoyoverse dedicates some version updates to fill this little mechanical gaps that improve the overall experience rather than fill them with events...

I'm sorry if this is too long, but it is sad to see people abandoning a game they trully love. And I really hope I'll be able to play it until the end.

Whenever I feel burnt out, I just explore the world without using teleport waypoints. It brings back so much memories when I'm still a low AR player. I think burn out happens when players take the game too seriously and grinds everything. I learned my lesson and just plays the game casually not worrying about capped resin and artifacts. Whenever I farm any domain, I don't expect anything good to not disappoint myself. "It is what it is" mentality helps me to enjoy the game more.

I'm pretty sure I could have avoided burnout if only somebody would have warned me what Genshin endgame is like 😅. But I went in blind, got super hyped, super invested in the story, exploration etc. and then hit my face against the wall.
So yea, to any people who consider playing Genshin, take it slow!

Overwhelming story and exploration is definitely a big part for me, but for me I definitely also have burnout from the gacha itself. A lot of the fun for me in a gacha is the cycle of anticipation, saving, and spending, but I ended up liking Sumeru's 4-stars more than the 5-star cast. The only Sumeru 5-star I was looking forward to pulling was Dehya, and I ended up skipping her because I didn't want to encourage the "dump her on the standard banner with bad stats and hope people pull out of fear that she'll never have a featured banner again" approach they took. I got was Nahida for pure meta reasons, pulled some constellations and signature weapons on characters I already had, and otherwise I've spent almost all of Sumeru in "saving" mode, without any of the fun of anticipating and summoning new characters. In a sense I'm lucky that I'm coming into Fontaine with 100k primos as a semi-regular Welkin player, but if Fontaine's cast doesn't click with me either there's a good chance I'll be done.

I’m actually coming back from burnout. After stopping playing Genshin for about 4 months, I came back to it yesterday just to do some dailies. It felt nice to go back though and it was just the break I needed.

For me my burnout started when I started to realize how much time and effort is needed to just continue playing the game like for example pulling, as banners pass by the more primo needed to collect them but despite the amount of pull I've done, I keep getting the wrong characters which means more farming, I started to get frustrated at the fact that no matter what kind of effort I've done to save up, I just end up getting the wrong character even if I do get the character I wanted I already don't have enough for the next one I like I mean most gacha are suppose to be like that but I don't always have the time to do the quests, commissions, etc and to add even if I had time quest just becomes longer and longer that It slowly becomes uninteresting and commission also starts to get insanely repetitive, also adding the artifact farming its takes months just to get the artifact that you needed to get that perfect ration of crit rate/dmg and abyss is just there to remind you that you need to start farming if you wanna get all starts events are just there to entertain players for quite sometime which ultimately works sometimes but even after that all the primo you've gathered for months gone and a matter of minutes now the cycle repeats again,

I love the game I love the fact I can get characters I like but, I can't just devote my time to genshin only since I also have other responsibility that I need to do with my problems in life and also other games too ehe~

For me I think an issue I've been having is that the story quests keep getting longer and longer. I used to be like "well I'll pace myself by doing one story/character quest per day" and that way I'm not playing for hours and hours-- but nowadays a single story/character quest will TAKE hours and hours to do. Which I don't have time for that, and I have yet to figure out how to break up the quests into chunks that are satisfying.

For me personally, I love every aspect of the game may it be the characters, lore, quests, events, exploration and Spiral Abyss runs. It's also the reason why I voice my concerns on surveys(if they read it or not) that in order to keep the game more enjoyable is to add better QoL changes and maybe even slowly increase resin just a little bit. Overall, enjoy the game you love and do it at your own pace.

I think I fit pretty well into the “overwhelmed by content” category of Genshin burnout... but I’m also a pretty even mix between the two main types of burnout that you identify. I used to feel very “completionist” about the game, wanting to max explore, find all the books and enigmatic pages, finish all the quests—being new to gaming and enthralled by the open world, I wanted to experience Genshin Impact to the absolute fullest.
At some point I was totally caught up with every quest and almost every exploration area… and I immediately became incredibly bored. Artifact farming didn’t pay off enough to be interesting, and getting into meta and new characters wasn’t really possible as a f2p player. I decided to let quests build up over the next couple of patches, and this plan to “restock” quickly went downhill—instead of feeling encouraged by the incoming flow of content, I felt too tired of the simmering urge to catch up on everything I’d fallen behind in to enjoy it if I tried.
I don’t really remember how I got out of this slump. I know the Perilous Trail event and the Sumeru Archon quests were patches that I really fell in love with, but since news of Fontaine started taking over Genshin’s social media spheres I’ve been slowly trying to learn how to pace myself—both with knowing how best to catch up with things and at the same time learning how to tell when I’m starting to get tired of living in a screen. I definitely learned some things from my burst of interaction at the beginning of the 3.x patches that I’m trying to prepare for and pace better when 4.0 drops, and I feel much better prepared for new content than I have in the past!

Exploration is my favorite part, but quests really can get tiring.. I did well keeping up with Sumeru but needed to take a break this spring/summer because I only have so much time for games and HSR was so engaging.. but at least I just have the final section of the desert in Sumeru to go! Hoping to get that done by Fontaine so I can start fresh.

I started Day 1, and haven't missed a single day of playing. I think the closest I got to burning out was Eula's first banner, when I spent most my primogems at the time on her. Seeing my saved primogems go down to basically nothing made me not want to build it back up again. Of course, this happens in any game for me. Even a single player game, if I hoard something and then spend it... it makes it tough to want to keep playing for some reason for me, lol.

In the end, instead of stopping, I decided to take things at a more casual pace. I decided to log in only once a day to do the dailies and use my resin, and not worry about any overflow. Now, despite not having missed a single day yet, the game has become a very relaxing part of my day. The moment I boot the game up, and I hear the intro music, I start destressing and relaxing. I've never found daily quests to be a chore or anything, either. It's different for everyone, of course. For me, it's a short relaxing portion of my day to get away from my hectic life for a time.

New player perspective (rambling): It seems to me that 'burnout' is an incredibly difficult issue to address because it's experienced through the lens of players' expectations and past experiences. I came from a raiding MMORPG background having quit WoW after 15 years and taking a 1.5 year break before starting Genshin as my new game. There are many wonderful things about Genshin but I've found over the years that the biggest protective factor against burnout in gaming (for me, personally) is having happy social relationships within gameplay itself. So many kind and funny people have helped me learn about the game in co-op domain farms who I've met through the Genshin discord. But there's no aspect of the game that brings us back together once you progress past the point of needing assistance/carries.

There are examples of Genshin content creators who have been incredibly inventive in finding ways to keep the game interesting but at the end of the day, finding ways to enjoy meaningful combat (combat being the aspect of the game that I enjoy most) with friends is a huge barrier to longevity. Without these kinds of activities, the only way to pursue novelty is to secure new characters/weapons and players can then end up feeling 'trapped' in the loop of menial activities that reward primogems and are also incentivised to spend money to do so. Maybe some people are better at accepting this aspect of how the game currently is than others.

Genshin is my first 'gacha' game, so I don't have much sense of what is realistic to ask developers to change moving forward but it's obvious that many aspects of 'burnout' are linked to the very nature of 'gacha' itself.

i have an experience with playing a game for 8 years on and off. there was just this emotional tie i had to it that's hard to put into words. it kept me going back whenever I got tired of other games. It was partially the good memories I made inside the game with friends, but also the game itself. If you play a game like that, a game becomes a 'place' instead of just a source of entertainment. It's like that feel-good movie that you rewatch everytime you crave that magic sauce. Sometimes though, when going back to something with those kind of expectations, you realize you left your nostalgia glasses off and is shocked that the seratonin isn't kicking in. That's what happened to me with that mmo i used to play. It lost the magic sauce. Genshin still has it though, so I'm still a happy camper, but I'm not delusional. that sauce has an expiration date. i just don't know when mines will expire, but apparently for a lot of people, theirs expire a faster because of various reasons. This doesn't make any of the issues players might have with the game invalid of course. I think the game had big issues since the very beginning that have not been fixed even going on 3 years now. It's just we were so "in love" with the game that we were willing to put up with those issues and once the love runs thin, so does our patience or willingness to overlook them. As corny as it sounds, it's kind of like a relationship with a person. Every person has issues and some have more serious issues than others of course, but when you're in love with something/someone, you put up with a lot of stuff. Eventually the rose-colored glasses come off and we're just not willing to ignore them anymore. Of course, there's a portion of the playerbase that claims they have 0 expectations so they can't be disappointed, but I personally don't subscribe to that, because how can you have 0 expectations for something/someone you like? If anything, you subconsciously still hope it improves or fixes those issues, but of course that rarely ever happens no matter if it's a person or a company. The only option really is to leave it/them and maybe come back later if ever.
