It is critical to understand how to read off the position of your boat to perform a mayday call in the event of an emergency. A mayday call is only used when there is imminent danger & distress present such as a fire, boat sinking, man overboard or a crewmember is seriously injured.

In the event you need to call a mayday you must follow a specific procedure. On your VHF radio you will say "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday This is [vessel name and/or call sign if you have one], My position is [details of the ship's position (demonstrated in video)], My vessel is [Nature of Distress].
