On 7 September 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana, outlining a vision that would shake up not just transport routes but also global politics in the following decade.

The speech set in motion what’s now known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Central Asia. But as the ambitious development campaign marks its 10th anniversary, the political landscape in Central Asia and the world has also been shifting. Growing US-China rivalry, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the advancement of the China-led connectivity drive have reshuffled the geopolitical calculus for players big and small in the region.

In the first episode of a three-part special, CNA Correspondent travels to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to find out more about the region’s latest place in the Belt and Road Initiative.

00:00 Introduction
04:47 Kazakhstan's gateway between Europe and China
10:35 Mixed reactions towards China and BRI in Central Asia
13:40 Uzbekistan courts China to capitalise on new Silk Road
18:30 BRI means increased tourism to Central Asia?

It's curious that some people are skeptical of China's BRI assistance. What has China ever done to cause them doubt?

Since opening up in the 1980s, China has respected all nations. China has not interfered in any nation's politics. China has not imposed sanctions on any country. China has not taken military action against anybody — _no wars have been fought in the last 44 years!_

Compare China with USA:

1) Numerous wars including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen in recent years.
2) Numerous sanctions against dozens of countries.
3) Numerous coups to overthrow foreign governments.

Moreover, what has USA done to advance the development of any country in the Global South? Especially in Africa, Middle East, and Latin America.

BRI is a great boon for mankind.

Is she saying the country name wrong multiple times and finally have it correct or is it just me. Apparently, it doesn't seem to bother anyone here as it appear that I'm the only one complaining. 😌

It takes time to build trust. China relations are based in mutual benefit and that’s why it will be a success.

China : Profit through cooperative trading.
U$A : Profit through exploit using divide and amplify conflict.

G(1+6) meeting:
On geopolitics for politicians interest.
To divide and create/amplify conflict in others home for weapon sales, exploit.

BRICS meeting:
On economy for the people interest.
Food and better life for the people.

Development is good for national economy, but some people gain more, some people lose more. China provides funding and building to receive reasonable profits .

Why has trade growth become a discontent for local residents?

Belt and One Road projects that are not all successful, but for Central Asia, One Belt and One Road is definitely a success. Central Asian countries have been blocked from the world for a long time due to their geographical environment.

Here's a trivia to all Chinese netizens reading this. Name one Chinese emperor who claimed the entire South China Sea including the Spratley. Just one. There should be historical records of such claim by such emperor. Like your Emperor Yongle who claimed sovereignty over Ceylon in the 1400s. Some details of its history were written in the book "When China Ruled the Seas: The Treasure Fleet of the Dragon Throne" by Louise Levathes.

If your government says it has historical basis for its sovereignty rights over the SCS, then who was the emperor who made such claim? If you can't name one -- JUST ONE -- then what are you dong here? You're just doing lip-service for something you can't prove. China has no history in the Spratleys. It's game over.

I am very happy that after the 10th anniversary of BRI, China has strictly reviewed project cooperation and raised loan requirements. We know that some countries have no credibility and will not even repay interest.
