IELTS Speaking Band 9: The Power of Youth

Speaking Topics: Part 1 Hobbies, Sports and School, Part 2 a School or Work Project, and Part 3 Projects and Productivity.

If you guessed that this candidate (Sybella) is my (Adrian’s) daughter, you guessed right! This IELTS video project has a special place in my heart, not only because she is my child, but also because of the way Sybella vindicates my studies in psychology and language learning – in certain ways, kids are better communicators.

As some viewers know, I hold a degree in psychology from the University of Victoria, BC, Canada, with a focus on developmental and child psychology. A big part of these studies are language acquisition and communication, both of which are tested in the IELTS Speaking Exam, and I implement this knowledge in my teaching for your success.

For some months, Sybella has been asking me to make a video with her, and to be honest, I had been quite dismissive until recent; I failed to see what was right in front of me, and a great value to all language and IELTS learners – “children are the best at learning languages and are programmed to master communication”! It is not simply children’s brain biology that makes them great with languages; of course, we cannot replicate this physiological neural plasticity, but it is also their interpersonal and social predispositions to understand and to be understood by their audiences – This latter part we can replicate and use to get higher IELTS scores in the Speaking Interview.

Currently, Sybella is fluent in English, Hungarian and well underway to mastering French. While preparing for this interview, I was surprised to witness the many theories taught in language acquisition of children. For instance, I had never explicitly instructed Sybella to use parts of the questions in her answers, nor did I tell her to emphasize words of interest, or to give visible examples to support her logic, she did this on her own. It is these intrinsic mindsets of children that we as adults must remember to practice and implement to improve our learning and communication for those coveted band 7, 8 and 9 scores.

I know she is a native speaker, yet she still has a big vocabulary for age of 7! Would love to see these kind of videos.

I have never understood why people are impressed when a native English speaker speaks English quite well. If I took a Spanish test, I would definitely score very high too.

How she could answer just so immediate after the questions were given? She didn’t have to even think what she was going to speak..? For me this looks she had prepared all the answers beforehand..if not, her communication level is so high.
