Are GMOs safe?

GMO crops as we recognize them now have been around since the 1990s where early varieties were becoming available. These were industry led products that were approved for animal consumption. Animal feed being a primary use for subsidized crops like corn in the USA. A crop that could have significantly higher yields and consequential profit with a GMO variety. It was only for animal feed because of concerns about allergic reactions in humans. This “animal feed only” GMO was found in human food soon after. This is how GMOs entered mainstream consciousness, scandal and ignorance.

This is coupled with the tail end of the mass environmental activist movements and gave them a new focus. This concentration of activists and a new target led to a wave of action. Actions that led to GMOs destroyed, burned and made a pariah because they are purportedly dangerous to the environment. You may wonder what makes activists do this and more importantly what evidence they rely on.

The problem is that little evidence exists against GMOs at present.

Common arguments against GMOs fall into one of two broad categories. Human health and environmental dangers. Arguments against GMOs relating to the environment look at Bt varieties. These produce their own pesticide which has the theoretical capacity to harm pests like butterflies that are not a direct predator. What of birds that eat the dead insects. So on and so up it goes the food chain.

Secondary to this is the danger to people when they eat GMOs. We can thank Seralini et al for this being necessary. They found tenuous evidence of GMO health risks. It was based on a flawed method, design, statistics and species. The conclusions were was drawn, amplified and disseminated by activists.

These two arguments summarize the fear anti GMO activists espouse and the best known examples they use to justify their activities.

It is obvious that no one has suddenly pulled GMOs from the market in the last 10 years. No large scale scandals have happened. No agricultural seed company has stopped research into GMOs. If the evidence was as compelling as activists believe why would they not follow the example of Aventis and withdraw their products rather than face massive liabilities?

The answer is simple what evidence does exist strongly supports the safety of GMO crops both for the environment and for human consumption. In fact over the last few years very compelling statistics have become available which demonstrate an immediate benefit from GMOs and long term benefits. Whether that is higher yields, 122% increase, less pesticide/ herbicide use , 10% of pre GMO use, or the reduced cost to the farmer.
