Linux Mint 20, codenamed "Ulyana," was recently released so I thought I would take a quick first look at Linux Mint 20 with the Cinnamon desktop environment. Linux Mint 20 has made headlines recently due to their decision to try to block installation of snaps.

I use Mint 19.3 XFCE. Been stable as a rock, super quick, and light on resources. I have maybe two Flatpak apps installed but my apps are mostly from custom added PPAs and DEB file install direct from the software devs. No Snaps. Everything works and I have full control. Couldn’t be happier.

Rock solid easy to use distro. Used it for years. Tried others, but always come back to this. Very reliable and easy to use distro.

In University, maybe 12 years ago, my friend introduced me to Linux Mint. I hated it, but it could access the bad sectors our pirated movies and music Windows couldn't read.
It would be 8 years later when Windows broke my AC and my battery. 20 minutes, it would drain. But charging was a pain.
By then I was legit. I bought all software. Best decision ever. Because I refused to pirate Windows, I looked for alternatives. I remembered Mint. But I wanted my own journey this time. I install vanilla Ubuntu and my life changed.

Today, I'm a Systems Architect. I run Arch and DWM.

You already know, I'm sure, but the problem with snaps is that Ubuntu installs without your knowledge/indication. When install Chromium, for instance, it installs Snaps. For those not wanting Snaps, then finding it installed behind your back is underhanded. Love Mint Cinnamon. But I use Manjaro XFCE :)

The manjaro version is great. Linux mint cinnamon is actually good

Nice summary. So many of the distro reviews focus on superficial aesthetics rather than functionality. You did a good job of highlighting the stuff that matters although you missed a few key things like fractional scaling. To non-Linux geeks, a big part of the appeal of Mint is the depth of the GUI tools and apps. Some users can avoid ever opening a terminal window which is more than you can say for most other distros. Mint also tends to be more stable than many other distros and gives you the tools, like Time Machine, to help a novice recover even if something does go wrong.

To someone who just installed Linux mint for the first time, when you said I don't like icons on my desktop it sounded akin to I don't like limbs on my torso. :D

It's really polished. I can see why its a popular distro with beginners and intermediate users

Kudos to Linux Mint for disabling snaps by default. snapd is spyware.

For what I heard the issue was that it would use snap when you tried to use apt. It should always be the choice of the user what package manager is used. If I do enter sudo apt install, then I want to install with apt, not snap.

Christ, have I been with Linux that long? My first distro was Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon... late 2012? I guess I'm well and truly over Windows :D

I love Mint. But I use Mate instead of Cinnamon. I installed it on my XPS developer's edition and seems to work great. I am not excited about the fonts in the desk bar, I've found a snag using light wallpapers while using transparent desk bar. Other then that Mint 20 seems fantastic. I don't tend to like Snaps so I am glad that isn't enabled. It's just bloat and a vector for viruses. I got away from Windows to get away from the bloat and insecurities after all.

I have been on ubuntu base since 20.4 came out and now on mint mainly because i lured a friend into linux with mint. My appreciation for Plasma + Arch keeps growing. I almost feel like Plasma is not a desktop, its a set of tools that you can do what ever the hell you want with. Ubuntu, and even Cinnamon are more complicated to customize E.X.A.C.T.L.Y as you want.

I like Mint, ran it for awhile once... but it is not my favorite. Will you be looking at Zenwalk Linux 15 in the future?

Linux mint helpmed me learn about linux for 6-7 years and helped me switch to Arch. I have so much respect to LM for that. Mint is a great example one could have drunk parents and still turn out to be a good kid. P.s., f*ck Ubuntu.

Synaptics has screenshots for most of the packages. It just lacks user reviews.
